The pic below shows it all...Out of the blue the computer froze and I see this. So I turned it off using the power button and the laptop never restarted. I am mostly suspecting a graphics card failure from the looks of the jarbled up screen.pfft :(

If you can reinstall windows xp os it should fix it, no guarantees, but this happend to some of our macs and hp laptops at work, we test installed xp/mac os on good machines to know what keystrokes to press, then installed it on these machines and it was fixed. This would be a good thing, a bad thing would be like you said video card failure. Good Luck

Well, I would try, but it does not even turn on. Pressing the power button results in utter silence from the laptop. So, the issue is most definately hardware related.

Yeah, they would fix it under warranty and have already talked to them. But the computer is just 25 days old and I am not pleased with the fact that it has broken down and needs to be fixed so soon.

Ohh, umm motherboard? That sucks, hardware issues are never fun. (or cheap) I hope that its under warranty.

I purchased a used older i book just for the heck of it from my buisness for 50 bucks, they said buy at your own risk and 2 months later the logic board went. lol I think i got my 50 bucks worth though just experimenting with it.

Yay! 3 cheers for HP Support. I finally managed to convince them to refund my laptop. It took them some convincing though. But I finally got through. Anyways, I decided that I would try out the dv2000t for a change and ordered the following spec. It is a bit of an upgrade from the V3000z, so I'm hoping that it would be worth it.

    Windows XP Home Edition
    Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2500 (2.0 GHz)
    14.1" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
    128MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7200
    512MB DDR2 SDRAM (2x256MB)
100 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
Personalization HP IMPRINT Finish + Microphone
    8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
    Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
    12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Genuine Windows XP Home Edition Backup CD
    $1090 + Tax.
    For the V3000z I paid about $960.
The faster processor, GPU & larger HDD should be worth the extra ~$170.
    Est.Shipping date is August 3rd.

    Me Happy :)

EDIT: The only thing that probably left a bit of bad taste is that the reps try very very hard to sell you the max specification(I know its their job but I think they sometimes do take it a bit too far). I had to reject the extended warranty 3 or more times. He also added the 2 day shipping($79!!) instead of the free shipping. He never gave me te option of free shipping until I asked him for it. He also insisted on the optional bluetooth. So as a warning to anyone who likes to order over the phone know the specifcations and the deals available before calling. Otherwise they will milk every penny out of your pocket.

I am getting the same system except with Bluetooth, without DVD burner, 80 Gig HD and 1 Gig ram instead of 512. My delivery date is August 2nd... These will be the most agonizing 8 days of my life...

Good work with the Reps, Miner :). Seems like the Core Duo is a better choice than the X2, at least for the time being
I would have taken the bluetooth; it's nice to go out camping and still be able to check the forums with the laptop and the mobile :).
