I have a Dv6244us running windows 7 and for a while now the disc drive has been sporadically ejecting without any pushing of the eject button. Now it only opens occasionally when prompted to do so and it has stopped reading discs; when I go to My Computer it tells me to insert a disc when there is one in the drive. Does anyone have suggestions for a possible fix?

Another drive... Optical drives tend to die quite frequently these days.

Dang I was kind of afraid that this was the only solution.

Also I don't know if this makes any difference but I figured out that if I hold the laptop with the back of the screen resting on my knees while sitting, it will read the discs. Not sure why this is the case, or if this is really relevant in finding another possible solution but it's something that I've observed.

Mmm, so it is position dependant. Probably the optical head doesn't sit properly on the rails anymore. Regardless, it's very delicate to fix, i've fixed my share of desktop drives and it's hard enough on those, let alone on a laptop.

A new drive is cheaper than all the time you'll spend trying to fix this one.
