For some reason my Optical Drive is not showing up in 'my computer'. Checked in device manager and there is no DVD/CD-ROM drives showing up in there either. This happened before and HP told me to delete the upper and lower filters in the registry which solved the problem but now the drive has disappeared again. Does anyone out there know how I could solve this.

Oh yeah, its a dv9000 and I'm running Vista Home Premium.

Not sure how to check it i Bios. But Disc management just says 'NO MEDIA' for the optical drive. Downloaded Tweak VI but not that familiar with it.

Ok, if you put in a CD/DVD into the ODD, what does Disk Management say ?

When booting, press F2 or whatever key you press to access the BIOS, and check if the ODD is listed or not.

To the OP, on HP notebooks press F10 during POST (during boot or reboot) to access the BIOS.

My optical drive just reappeared a while ago and now its gone again, I guess thats why it said no media earlier. Now in disc management the optical drive doesn't appear at all. I don't see it anywhere in the BIOS either.

Try removing it physically, then re-connect it.

Its re-appeared on its own again, dunno whats up with, seems to disappear completely at random then reappear again. I'll try remove it and re-connect it if it happens again. Thanks for the feedback

I thought I would chime in as I was having similar disk problems on my HP Pavilion dv2000 and was looking for answers myself.

Good call on the removing and reattaching the optical drive itself. I removed the screw and it seem to almost slide out. I put it back in and it seem to go in a little farther that time. I pulled the drive back out and examined it. There was a bracket screwed in to the drive to anchor it in with the screw that comes through the case. I noticed that bracket was bent slightly allowing for some play in keeping the drive in place by probably only a quarter of an inch or so. I unscrewed and reshaped the bracket and reassembled the laptop. I turned the machine on and Presto the drive is recognized again.

It was an annoying problem because the connection was enough to power the drive. You could open the drive and insert disk and then the drive light would come on and disk would spin but the system itself wouldn't recognize the drive.

I am posting in the hopes that this might help someone else having these problems.

    Thanks.
