I have a dv6000z and I think I might of screwed something up disconnecting some ZIF cables.
I definitely disconnected the keyboard ZIF cable without unlocking the connector first, with those little tabs, a couple times. Now only a few keys on the keyboard work.
I also did this with the power button board, which now no longer works either.
Connected to the system board are 2 ZIF cables, one from the power button board and one from the LED connector. How are these supposed to be unplugged as I don't see a locking mechanism.
Thanks, I really hope that these parts are not broken, maybe the computer shop over here will be able to find out if the motherboard connectors are broken and be able to replace them without me having to replace the whole board.
-
Isnt there a locking bar on the system board ZIF connectors? Can you take a photo of it?
I remember asking previously if you removed the connectors properly.
Next time you pull apart your notebook, watch the video guide -
I watched it but there was no video on removing the ZIF connectors from the main board. The other two mistakes I made previous to your posting the video guide but now I know what to do in the future
-
Computer guy checked out the power button with a voltmeter and said that it is working fine. I called HP about getting the replacement ribbon cables but like usual they had no idea what I was talking about. I can't stand them over there, they are just drones who have no idea about computers at all.
Anyone got any info on where I can find some replacement ZIF cables. -

You'll probably have to replace the entire keyboard and the button bar (or whatever it's called). Check eBay as well as partsurfer.hp.com. Search on the part #. That's assuming that it's the cable that's broken and nothing else. You could also have corroded contacts on the ends of the ribbon cable, they might not be fully inserted especially if you haven't figured out the trick to unlocking the connector, ?

How would I find video's for dv6700 series?
-
I just posted it above. The video guide is practically all the same for dv6000 series
-
The video doesn't show the removing of the cables from the mainboard only from the power button board and led assembly.
When removing it from the board is there a switch or anything like there is on the other end of the cables. If the ends are corroded is there a way to clean them in some solution or something. -
54 bucks from the hp site, didn't find anything on ebay, for a miscellaneous cable kit. I don't even know what's in it. Uhhhhhhhhhhh.
-
Firstly, have you learnt how to properly unlock the ZIF connector bar?
You need to replace the 2 ribbon cables, as you probably damaged the other end from improperly taking it out -
I found the cables on ebay for around 25 a piece. Still sounds somewhat expensive, or is that just me.

-
Yes it is expensive, but doesnt seem like you have any other choices.
Have you bought a new keyboard yet? -
Well since I now have no way of turning the machine back on I have held off on buying the new keyboard. If the motherboard connector is shot then I'm gonna have to decide if it is even worth fixing. Might just end up selling the machine for parts and putting it towards a new machine. I can turn the machine on through the LED assembly using the quick launch button so I think I'm just gonna buy one wire and see if I can get it to turn back on then go ahead and replace the keyboard then if that all goes well buy another cord for the power button even though it's not necessary to replace I might as well.
-
I see where those connectors are but this picture gives me nothing, or appears to give me nothing, in ways of releasing the bar, which I still don't see. I do not have the top cover off, does this need to be removed. I am uber confused here.
-
You push the bar towards the cables direction and it will unlock. Did you not watch the videos? (not for the system board but how the other ZIF connectors unlock)
-
Yeah I watched it for the other ones but this one just looks alot different. I'll go take another look, maybe you have to look very carefully, I have horrid corrected vision btw haha.
-
I still don't see a bar so I took a picture of the ZIF connectors. This picture is looking down on the machine as if you were using it.

Sorry i just realised that ribbons doesnt use ZIF but LIF (Low Insertion Force) connector. You have to push the ribbon end in gently till it gets tight and wedged into the connector. No locking bars.
-
LIF doesn't sound good. Me and my gorilla hands are gonna have to take a chill pill before doing this.
-
It shouldnt be that hard. Im not quite sure why they dont use ZIF. It would have been a better choice.
I could recommend you drugs snipers use to keep their hands calm and steady -
Haha yes please, also I need a sniper rifle. Oh hold on we're talking about fixing computers?

Just got cables and keyboard today. The cables are really short which sucks. 2 problems I still got.
1) replaced the keyboard and still some keys are not working, also the keys are not working in the bios so its not windows related. am i really screwed here with a screwed up motherboard connector?
2) the machine is making a repeated muffled beeping sound when
a) bios loads up
b) get to windows safe mode menu
c) when windows fully boots up and starts running startup programs
Thinking something with the speakers or the cable going to the speakers will investigate but this keyboard problem is very troubling.
Any ideas, I'm very disappointed right now? -
Maybe the cable was inserted the wrong side/way
Try the following aswell:
-
So that is the protocol for the beeping and your reply in the other thread is for the keyboard?
I unplugged the cable that does to the LED assembly and the beeping stopped, I'll go ahead and try this later when I get home. Thanks. -
I actually need to replace the ribbon cable that is for power and speaker on my DV6335ca because that cable is damaged from the stupid design of this laptop. Why would you put a THIN RIBBON under a POWER BUTTON that is MASHED at least twice a day?
Now I got to find that cable! -
I'm in the same dilemma and, to compound the problem, in the process of swapping the power button ribbon cable with the switch panel one have probably damaged both if not the motherboard.
It almost makes me wonder if such a simple flaw, that can bring down an otherwise decent laptop, isn't built-in obsolescence. Forces everyone to purchase a new notebook every few years. If not for Google searches and this forum would never have suspected a worn ribbon cable and blamed the motherboard.
Anyone find a workaround for this or replacement cable? Looks like might be selling parts soon on E-bay if not - Rich :confused2: -
damn zif cables/connector crap!!!
now i need to find/order a replacement cable
