Nov 2011 - My HP DV9035NR laptop has finally died, at only 5 years old.
First, the internal fan (only has one) started making loud noise. I sent it to HP for repairs which cost me $300 and 10 days without the laptop. That was only 1 year ago.
Recently, the integrated (built into the motherboard) video adapter died. The laptop screen started having pixels randomly appear all over the screen, making it very difficult to see the screen. It only got worse, when moving the mouse. Eventually, the system blue-screened (BSOD - blue screen of death) with an Nvidia error regarding driver NVLDDMKM.SYS and STOP code 0x00000116. This was indeed a hardware issue which would require REPLACING the entire motherboard to get the laptop working again.
Given these issues and costs, I will not be buying an HP laptop ever again. In my opinion and experience, Dell is the leader in computers (desktop / laptop) while HP is the leader in printers.

5 years is actually a decent lifespan for a consumer notebook, many people tend to look around for a replacement after their 3rd or 4th year. Of course it's distressing when your notebook dies on you, especially when you had it repaired not so long ago. Personally if I was given a bill of $300 to repair it (especially for a loud fan) I would just walk away and find an alternative given the cost of a newer notebook is not that significantly much.

my HP dv9000 just recently died on me after 4.5 years too due to that infamous GPU problem.
I made three repair attempts with reflowing the solder and it work the 1st 2 times but I knew that couldn't last forever.
Even if the computer still works, I found out that after 4 years, technology have advance far enough that it was beginning to not meet my needs so I would have replaced it anyway.
As I'm looking for my next build, I still think I'll take another chance w/ HP again.
The dv6000z series w/ the AMD APU looks promising. They've redesigned the fan/heatsink so it looks like it'll dissipate heat better.
just my 2cent -
I think 5 years is pretty darn good for a notebook. Heck, that's actually pretty good for desktop standards.

geeze and I thought I was happy my desktop would last 3 years.

In my mind HP is the leader in computers (Desktop/Laptop) and Dell is the leader in pot-heads. -
My Toshiba's lasted me 8 year and going strong.
I love my new lappy though. -
I have been a life long Dell user and the last laptop I bought from them was junk. When you call Dell to have them fix problems when your computer is under warranty they made me jump through hoops to get them to help me. I just bought a HP laptop and couldn't be happier with it. I have called HP to help them with problems I had and they helped me and it was a way nicer experience compared to Dell. This is just my opinion.

Yes, my last laptop was a dell that died barely a month out of the one year warranty.

In laptop years, 5 years is like 65 years. Consider yourself lucky

I buy my laptops to last me 3-4 years. After that new tech is so advanced that its time to buy a new one anyways.

5 years is a fantastic lifespan if you use your laptop everyday.
If you just use it on trips or at a friends or coffee shop, then
there is no reason it can't last 10 years. But who wants to use
a 10 year old laptop! -
5 years is good. I have a DV4 that's 6.5 years old and still working and not so bad either, lol. They used to make great laptops. Although I have an Asus now which I LOVE, I'm thinking about the DV6-6bXX for next year.

I think the biggest problem with laptop failures is because they are caused by integrated graphics cards. I used to have an HP ZD7000 series and had to replace the mb in less than a year of ownership because of a fried up nVidia GPU. HP replaced it under warranty with an inferior ATI card attached to the new motherboard because the previous gpu had ran too hot. A few months later after my warranty expired, the mb fried again and it wouldn't even start. The ZD7000 was also a Pentium4 processor which was a hot coal to begin with, combined with the bad design of the ZD7000 series I was guaranteed to be doomed. Since then I replaced the HP brand with a Toshiba Satellite (with integrated Intel graphics) and haven't had any issues with it ever since, for more than two years now and there are no signs of heat issues or other symptoms related to graphics.
I am pretty weary about the newer GT550 that came with my Dell XPS Core i7-2670QM, I wonder how long my new Dell will hold up. The thing is I have the option to completely disable the nVidia card and utilize Intel.
There's no reason for a laptop to fail prematurely in less than 5-6 years unless there is a design issue with both hardware and component.
