Sounds like a loose or damaged/frayed cable?

I'm afraid that would be it... are there any tutorials on how to disassemble the display?

Yes, there are tutorials, via HP's Services Media Library. Since I don't know if you have an AMD or an Intel powered dv9700, I'll just post the links to both notebooks (NOTE: The links will point to the dv9500 series, but they should be the same as the dv9700 series).

    AMD
    Intel

Thanks for the help, guys. I checked all the connections and they were good. I have a feeling that it's a display sensor becaise once, the backlight was not working (I connected a monitor) but the display returned when I got back home tonight after I got out of the screensaver. Opening the display a little more afterwards made the display backlight disappear again.
Where is(are) the display sensor(s) located (the ones that detect whether it's open/closed)? I'll check it out next.

    Thanks again

    Hi,
I have a very similar problem to this with my dv9700: the display only partially works most of the time now (some of the colors will be missing/it will flicker red or the backlight will go dim or not work at all) and it changes when I move the lid. It definitely seems to be a mechanical problem instead of a driver/software issue...my question is how risky is it to disassemble the display and would it void the warranty?
    Thanks

If you still have warranty on the computer, just send it in to the company to fix.
