Sorry to hear that. There is no other way to set this that I know of. The following text also comes from Compaq's website:

    -------------
HP and Compaq Notebook PCs - Display Dims when Notebook is Disconnected from AC Adapter

    Description
If the notebook is disconnected from the AC adapter while running, the display will dim slightly.

    Solution
To conserve battery life, the notebook display brightness will be reduced when disconnected from the AC adapter.

To increase the brightness of the display on battery or AC power, hold the function key (Fn) down and tap the F8 key.
    ---------------

It could be that on the 2100 series, the notebook does *not* remember the battery setting, and always defaults back to a preset value.

The notebook will rememeber its last brightness levels on both battery and ac power independently. You simply have the setting for battery power lower than for AC power.

When you're on battery, set the brightness level as you desire (Fn-F7 and Fn-F8, I believe). That level will then be remembered the next time you are on battery power. Do the same when running on AC power to set that level.
