I'm wondering if anyone of you has noticed this on your HPs. On both my laptops the left side of the screen is darker than the right. Not by much, but enough to cause eyestrain in certain conditions. I thought the lamp in my DV9000 might be going out, but right now i also noticed it on my DV5. It is most noticeable when the backlight is set to low levels, and i usually keep my backlight low as i can't stand cold light, my eyes just don't like it.

Perhaps the lamp in those panels is on the left side? It doesn't make much sense especially for a wide screen (it usually is on the bottom), but if that's the case then it explains this uneven lighting.
