I notice that my screen saver won't come on or the display turn off after inactivity. The power settings are set for the display to turn off after 20 minutes but it never turns off. I've tried switching between high and low performance but it makes no difference. Also, the screen saver is set to come on after five minutes but it never comes on. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to look? I've gone through the advanced power settings and I can't find any reason why the display stays on. Any help is appreciated as I don't like to always close the lid just so the screen doesn't stay lit.

    What laptop/BIOS/OS?

Its possible thats something is still active which stops it going to screensaver.

It turns out the mouse driver needed to be updated. That is something that I never would have thought of.

I guess Microsoft had some issues with their wireless/optical mice that wouldn't allow a computer to go into sleep/hibernate mode. I just plugged in the mouse when I first got it and it work fine so I didn't think to update with the latest drivers. Just in case someone searches this issue at a later date, new mouse drivers can be downloaded from here:
