Are there currently any Bios mods for this laptop?
-
Couple more questions: I'm also seeing that there is a 1600 x 900 screen out there. Is it possible to make a swap to this? I did something similar with my 7805u from the regular 1440x900 to a higher resolution.
Anyone know about overclocking the CPU or would I need the custom Bios for that?
Any possible way to upgrade the CPU to a mobile i7? I got this laptop for free so anything I do to it will be experimental.
Is there any way to control the LED colours or are they single colour LED? -
You could probably swap the LCD, sure.
I wouldn't upgrade the CPU even if I could - the cooling system isn't meant for a hotter processor. -
Thank's for the response on those two points. Do you know the answer to any of my others or is there anyone that's willing to help [aka bump]
Do you have a recommendation on where to buy this 1600 x 900 screen? I've tried googling around but I cannot seem to find it. Yet it's clearly talked about here on this forum a few threads below this one.
Ah, but that's the point. I'm not doing stuff because I shouldn't. I'm doing stuff because I can. I've already completed a design for a lightweight/portable make-shift improved cooling system. Now I'm just wondering if I should begin construction. It all depends on what processors can run with this socket and if they can actually be upgraded without screwing anything up.
Another question that comes to mind is if this board can support 16GBs of DDR3. I know the specifications say it can only support 8GBs but for a long time the specs said the p7805u could only support 4GBs and that was a lie. Is it hardware related or bios? If its bios then a custom bios would solve the problem of it. -
I can't really answer any of your other questions. My DM4 arrives today but the only way to know the answer to some of your 'will it do this' questions is to tear it apart, and my wife would proceed to tear me apart if I did that.
I don't know where to get the screen as a standalone part but I know there are people on this forum who know how to get HP parts. Sorry I can't help you any further.
I would advise against monkeying with the cooling system. HP has a tendency to cram as much power as possible into a small space and have their laptops run a little warm. If there were a way to improve the cooling enough to offer an i7, they'd offer an i7. I'm sure there are aftermarket solutions, but I would assume that they'd be expensive enough that I wonder why you'd start with a DM4 as a base to begin with. -
As I said; I got the DM4 for free. Just something I won. I tend to win quite a few things and I find that my time with these objectives before I sell/give the away is best spent messing with them. I've only had my DM4 for about a week so I'm getting the gist of it now. What I normally do is keep a product for about 6 months; If I break it then that's no big.
I've got my p7805u that I love to death. After 6 months I'll end up holding a contest or just giving it away to a random person on the street. Essentially a Turn for a Turn unless I really need money then I'll sell the product for whatever reason. That doesn't happen usually.
I have remarkable luck at winning. *Knock on wood* don't want to jinks it.
Thank you for your help :] Hopefully I can get one of those people who know where to get parts to come in here and look at my thread. The cooling modification I suggested had more to do with the case then the laptop.
I was going to use it as a attachable external cooling system. A very thin one powered by one of the three USB ports or a tiny battery of it's own. I just needed to make some latches and clean some stuff inside before I make it.
Thanks again -
There's a regular poster in the dv6 llano thread who's done some pretty crazy cooling mods, and can run an AMD A8 at 2.9GHz at 89C when most folks are lucky to get 2.3 or 2.4GHz before they hit 89C. His mods are in his sig.

:] Thanks for the information. I checked him out but I've got a completely different computer so I don't know how much help he'd be.

I just spent the past 30 minutes ripping this thing apart. I still couldn't find the PLL module. If someone could be kind enough to tell me what PLL module the DM4-1160us has I'd be extremely happy.

Again anyone that can provide the clock generator would be a big help.
If the clock generator is locked down let me know :]
