HP places the recovery media right on the HDD and expects the user to burn the discs themselves, so there is no need to order the separate OS/recovery media unless you dont want to go about burning the recovery discs yourself.

As long as you have either burnt the recovery disc or purchased from HP & made a backup copy of the SWSetup folder, you should be good to go with the clean reinstallation of Windows.

Neither will provide you with an easy method of doing a clean install, but I would avoid paying $19 for 3 DVDs you can make yourself, especially if you will be taking advantage of the Vista upgrade. Basically, the system DVDs, whether you make them or order them, just provide a means of restoring the entire system, not just the OS. If you have an XP disc you can look at the guide here in the forums for how to recover your CD key and perform a clean install. If you don't have your own XP disc, I believe there is a guide on these forums for creating a bootable XP disc from the I386 folder on the hard drive.
