Do you face any issues while using HP's external disk drives?

If you are using the desktop while sitting on a desk/flat surface, I can understand its no big deal using these drives, but what about if you are using the laptop while its on your lap, and there is no flat surface around, and you need to use external drive to maybe watch a movie or play a game. In that case it sounds like drive will probably be "hanging" from the usb port - which is not a good idea. So wanted to ask you guys with latest Envy's and dm3's, how do you handle your drive in those cases of using drive away from a flat surface? Does it "hang"? do you have to juggle with it? For 2 of my friends, it was a deal breaker. Whats your experience?
