Do you use your laptop with the lid closed?

Just wondering if people use their laptops with the lid closed.

I'm thinking about getting an external monitor. If I get one, is it safe to use my dv2000 connected to the monitor and an external keyboard while the lid is completely closed?

My only concern is that sometimes, such as when ripping a dvd, the left palm rest gets warm. MY laptop never really gets HOT, but it does warm up quite a bit at certain times.

Should I have any concern about the screen getting damaged if I leave the laptops lid all the way down? Heat would have less area to dissipate.... just don't want to damage the laptops screen, I guess that's the only thing that could reallly get damaged.

    Thanks

I leave the music on with the lid closed when I leave the house sometimes. It does get warm but my screen seems fine.

The screen itself heats-up when used normally, so the screen is designed to operate at elevated temps. However the HD would heat-up a little more perhaps, not sure if the fan cools this area effectively or not.
I would think there is no heat build-up issue when operating a laptop with the lid closed.
I didn't realize notebooks operated with the lid closed. I thought they shut down. I never tryed changing the settings because i have a desktop also.

I soppose that, since Windwos XP (and probably earlier versions as well) give the user the option to allow the computer to remain on with the lid closed, it would mean that laptop manufacturers have to design their machines to work within that perameter.

I've closed the lid while listening to music, without any problems. But, as I mentioned, other tasks get my hard drive much hotter then others (whow... did that come out sounding dirty to anyone else, or is it just me???)

I operate my laptop closed most of the time, probably about 5 days out of the week on average. (using a docking station)

I leave it on for weeks at a time without problems.

I second k3I0 I've used HP Omnibook 500 for about 7 years, most of it docked to external monitor and keyboard (8 hours a day, 5 days a week). Never experienced a monitor problem. In fact, I would believe that using an external monitor prolongs the life of a laptop screen.....

You should be fine it will heat up very little but not enough to cause any damage
