I am very interested in purchasing a docking station (or possibly two, one for work, one for home) for my 8710p notebook.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this one

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834998018

I understand that it is for the older models of HPs Compaqs line of business notebooks, but the one advertised (as per HP.com) to work for the 8710p is

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834998019

The one for my specific model is $75 more :(

Is it possible that these two docking stations are compatible with the same notebooks?

I originally had the same concern.

I have the EN489UT. When I bought it, I found both docking stations to be compatible. The more expensive one has a HD and a CD/DVD expansion bay.

They do also come with a power cord which I didn't expect. Although you can use the one from the laptop, having a second one saves you about $80ish if you have to fish it through a desk and can't easily take it out.

They are both compatable with your 8710p. A minor typo on the newegg site: The cheaper model comes with a 135W adapter, not a 120W adapter. HP doesn't make a 120W adapter AFAIK.

Although I don't own either of them, I have used the cheaper one many times before in the Computer Science Lab at my school. They work very well.

Both will be fine. The dock I purchased for my nc8430 works perfectly fine on my 8710p.

    FYI...
The Power adapter which comes with the laptop 8710p is 120W
The power adapter which comes with the docking station EN489UT is 135W.
The laptop power adapter will NOT work with the docking station.
The docking station adapter will work standalone with the PC.

    Good note.

My intended point was that many docking stations use the same power cord but one isn't supplied with them. So if you don't want to have to crawl behind the desk everytime you go somewhere (and convenience is usually the point to a docking station) you have to fork out for a second cord thus increasing the cost by $70-80ish.

eh, I bought two of the smartdock (without the hdd). Once for home, one for work. They work wonderfully and actually save the settings for each one (seeing as I have two different ext monitors hooked up to each that are different sizes with different resolutions).

My only complaint is that the docks should have a little more weight to them. :)
