Does the HP Recovery Manager or using the recovery disks affect the files on the D drive also or does it only format and install on the C drive? Let me know if you have used it.

I did the HP restore and I did not lose any data on my D drive. I backed it all beforehand but it was all still there when it was done. Very nice too because all my documents, music, and anything I save go to the D drive.

If you are referring to the Vista recovery discs, yes they do restore the system back to the factory state, including the partitions (it wipes out all existing partitions and restores the original ones like the C drive and the Recovery Partition). I'm not sure about the XP recovery discs.

I am talking about the built in recovery manager on HP Pavilion Notebooks. The recovery disks that I've created myself also do the same, since the recovery manager provides the option to restore from the hard drive recovery partition or the recovery disks.

Reformatting from the Recovery partition will not have any effect on the Recovery partition. It will still be there after the format is complete.

The startup recovery used the D: drive to recover; the Recovery disk restores both the C: and the D: drive to delivered state (in about 9 hours elapsed time).
