Does HP allow its customers to change FedEx delivery addresses while it's shipping?

I doubt they do. But either way you should HP customer care and see what they have to say.

Talked to them a couple of hours ago and got 2 CSRs on two separate calls telling me that they can do that.

Why not just ship it to your new address when you order?

That's the problem. I don't know where I'm living. I'm planning to drive down there and stay a couple of nights at a motel/hotel so I can scout out maybe 3-5 possible apartments. I won't know until maybe August 5th where I'm living.

The it probably wasn't a good idea to order/ship a machine to any place other than your folks, friends, or a rented mailbox service.

Expecting a shipper to send out a thousand dollar machine and then (successfully) divert it in transit to a new location is a bit much.

I'm having it diverted to a FedEx center. I'm sure FedEx has a system for changing destinations.

Does FedEx have these FedEx centers in California, specifically at the FedEx stores in the Rosemead area?

Well, there's a slight dilemma. UPS allows you to ship your package to one of their branches so you can pick it up within 5 days from delivery. FedEx does too, but only if you ship via FedEx Express. I talked to two different HP CSRs and got the same answer which is if you ask them to, they can ship your notebook to the FedEx store closest to the zip code you provide.

Both CSRs got my order information, but I'm assuming this option is available everywhere. I'm in California too, but there's a better than slim chance I may need to have the notebook shipped to San Francisco instead of Orange County. The problem is that I don't know where I'm living yet and FedEx won't hold onto my notebook as I'm not shipping via express.

O god. Such a dilemma indeed. You should just have it shipped to a buddy or relative's house, if possible. I'm assuming you're going to school in NorCal?

Yep. I don't know anyone there. I could theoretically have it shipped to my sister's friend's home, but I've never met her friend. I'm not entrusting a $1,000 investment to someone I've never met unless my sister willingly puts down $1,000 as collateral--especially since this is SF.

The inconsistency lies in the answers I received from FedEx's CSRs and HP's CSRs. FedEx refuses to hold onto ground shipping customer's package for 5 or more days, but HP claims it can have the notebook delivered to another FedEx location upon request even while the notebook is being delivered. If we were to assume for one moment both sets of CSRs told me the truth, we can only reconcile the seemingly contradictory information by introducing the possibility HP has a special relationship with FedEx that grants exceptions in cases such as my own.

All that aside, none of this would be a problem if HP were to have the notebook delivered at my current address before August 1st. That's only 20 days. I'm told the notebook will be built by the 22nd. We'll see whether they can commit to their time frame.

EDIT: For clarification, yes, I'm having it shipped to my house here in OC. Worst comes to worst, I can have someone in my family ship it to my new address and foot the $40-50 shipping tab. I'd just rather avoid this extra cost.
