Hey guys, I'm planning on buying a DV6500 soon and I was just wondering if I should be comparing it to anything similar, if there is perhaps another notebook with the same specs and same price. From my experience, it seems HP is usually the cheapest around, is this true? Thanks!

It depends, I have not check now but a 1 to 2years ago, I used to checked every few weeks the prices of notebooks from both Dell and HP with the same or about the same configuration and HP always gave me the best deal(Low price and more stuff than what Dell offered for the same price). I have not been in the Dell website in a while so I am not sure how are prices now that they offer both Intel and AMD notebooks.

    Not now.

I've been following HP since October when I wanted a notebook originally. I figured I'd wait till Santa Rosa. Once SR hit, I realized HP did nothing but up the price and drop the ball on features. I actually got a much better computer, better built, and better features from Lenovo for 100 less than a somewhat comparable HP.

I actually just went to Lenovo.com right now and compared, and they didn't come close at all to HP.

HP may not always be the cheapest player around, but IMHO, they're definitely the best ones. Even if some pieces are a bit more expensive, they're worth the extra dollars as they provide quality.
I always totally avoid Dell and Acer. I travel a lot, especially in third world countries, and I need a tough reliable laptop. HPs have never failed on me in those dusty places where power supply is very unstable.
I change my laptop every 3 years to keep up with technology improvements, but after being bumped around being carried on in a backpack in planes, buses, trains, my HP notebooks are always in pefect shape!
Some of my colleagues have DELLs... well, they usually switch to HP after their lappy fails within a year in those conditions.

In one word: no hesitation, go for HP.

I agree with f15hp, Dell tries to make their stuff look like a good deal with all those dumb $400, $500 off coupons but really they are more expensive than a comparable HP because they bump up the price in the first place..!

I think sometimes you can get better deals with Dell. It all depends on what you want and the coupons that are available

Unfortunately asking this is sort of like asking which religion is best. So keep in mind any answer you get will be somewhat biased.

From what I've seen the quality on HP's are somewhat better than Dell's. However, Dell (especially when you watch sites like gotapex for a good deal) can be cheaper.

So do you value better quality or lower price?

Personally, I prefer quality over price -- which is why I went with a "Business Class" system. HP over Dell (and Lenovo) because they didn't sell systems with descent gaming cards in them.... and XPS systems look way to gaudy to me.

In the end, I've felt that a the price difference between laptops is generally small enough to become insignificant over time. So I prefer to stick to factors besides price when comparing similar offerings.

How so? non matte screen options, no 1GB 1 stick ram option, lower resolution, no trackpoint option in the consumer models, no advanced graphic options, 2 year warranty is more than lenovo's 3, no 7200rpm HDD option, and that's all just off the top of my head. And with even those shortcomings the HP was about $100 more.

hey, I really wanted an Hp, I opened a line of credit and everything, but it seemed like they really shortchanged you with the SR chipset option.

Ok, just went back to HP.. looks like they offer the nvidia card now, but still, to config the system almost identical to my lenovo purchase, it cost $200 more. That's not really a good value.

HP actually has the best value for the money even with their options. Gateway, Sony, Lenovo, Dell, Everex, Averatec, Toshiba, Fujitsu, don't even have the options that HP offers and if they did the cost goes thru the roof. The SR chip just came out so in the marketing department they have to milk it for what it's worth. Intel is charging more for SR CPU since it just came out and everyone is clamoring for it like some people here. Whatever the market will bear.
