Hi there, just would like to know (b/c i think i member reading this previously) if adding ram voids the extended warrenty? Obviously its more cost effective to get the 256 stick in the v2000z and order a 512 stick online instead of getting the 512 thru hp ($50 upgrade). But just wanted to make sure it wont effect the 3 year extended warrenty.
thankss.

i think i was mistaken, i think i read changing the harddrive will void the warrenty... but adding ram wont... please let me know what the case is!
-
No, you're correct - RAM upgrades will not void the warranty on a HP notebook. Other components, like upgrading the HD, CPU, etc. will, however.
-
ok thanks - i'll be getting the v2000 then with only 256 and add 512 aftermarket.

Upgrading HD voids warranty? Why? They make it so simple to do!
Is there anyway for them to find out. I want to read the fine print on this as a plan on replacing my HD with something larger when I get my laptop. -
As for why, I suppose because it's something that, if you mess it up, can possibly mess up the whole computer. If you put in a bad drive with a skewed platter spinning at thousands of RPMs... ouch.
If you put in a stick of RAM wrong, all that happens is that the computer doesn't boot. That upgrade is safe enough for the end user. -

I think they are OK with you replacing the HD. Anything you can get to without cracking open the case is OK, and even then the better techs won't complain about replacing the internal SODIMM much of the time if they think you know what you're doing.
If it's documented anywhere besides the Service Guide, HP is OK with it. -
HP is not okay with you replacing the Hard Drive according to the documentation I've read. You can get at the processor cooling system on some notebooks just by removing a couple screws and a cover - but messing with the heat sink or processor is a sure way to kill your warranty.

Adding ram should not void your warranty at all. Yes it is more cost effective to buy a notebook with smaller amount of ram and just upgrade it yourself.
one thing that you want to make sure is that the notebook that you are going to be buying, has easy user access to the ram slot which most HP's that i have worked on do. -

Edit: The post AMDvIntel and dagamer are quoting is a direct response to the post above it, saying that the poster thought HP would be okay with it. -
Got your words jumbled up there!
Does adding Ram void warrenty?
