Just find this out couple of days ago. When I plugin my external HDD into the USB socket that close to the power plug, it appears unstable randomly. If there is a plugged in mouse next to it, sometimes the HDD won't even recognized. Even it is correctly mounted, it get lost after maybe 1 or 2 hrs. When I use the USB socket on the other side that close to Express Card, it works fine all the time.
The HDD that I used doesn't have any external power supply, and it works fine with all my other desktops and laptops. I think this unstable is caused by HP's limited USB power driver or maybe I got a defect USB interface?
Does anyone have same problem?

I havent experienced such issues. I usually charge my Ipaq and have mouse attached at the same time & havent recognised any stability issues. Have you undervolted the cpu at this time. Maybe try it at stock settings and see if you get the same symptoms.

I noticed that whenever I plug a powered USB device into my laptop, the power backfeeds into places it shouldn't inside the laptop, like the SD slot light and the mousepad light. I see lights staying on, even when the laptop is turned off! I have a feeling HP caught this, as the store models (although not 2000 series) do not have this problem a year later. I was one of the first to own the 2000 series (Dec '06) when the likelyhood of factory defects would have been highest.

brianstretch Notebook Virtuoso
Go into Device Manager, USB controllers, USB Root Hub (both of them), Power Management tab and make sure that "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked. It probably already is but that's all I can think of.
Does any DV2000/V3000 has USB power supply Problems?
