    What specific machine is this installed in?

    Card readers generally don't even need drivers, there are native drivers in the OS.

    I have a DV6000Z and my card reader was automatically detected and worked perfectly on vanilla Vista and XP installs. Memory Sticks work fine too in my lappy.

    I would rather have a messed up memory card reader than static on my VGA out and HP blowing me off when it comes to fixing it / replacing it.

    ::sighs::

    I have only tried an original sony memory stick. Haven't tried a memory stick pro yet, so that might be the one giving you problems.

    Service Pack 2 adds a lot of drivers and functionality, make sure you have that and are getting updates for your Windows.

    Personally, I found that you only really need SP2 nowadays--just don't go to fishy sites in your browser, and use a good one.
