Is it one of the 3 Major players? I.e. Clevo, Arima or Mitec. perhaps Compel? and does HP give the ODM there own specific guide lines on how they want the laptop manufactered? or is it something else?

    thanks.

Quantas, Inventec, FIC, Compal are a couple that I know of. Some sources suggested that a higher percentage of HPs (and DELL) are manufactured in these ODM's factories in China rather than in Taiwan, and therefore using a higher percentage of components/suppliers from China -- which leads to lower quality control. I cannot confirm this, though, as most of my friends are not directly involved in the laptop assebling/building business.

I do not know the detailed work break up. There are HP product development centers in Taiwan and China, so I suspect there is some collaboration between HP & ODMs in designing/defining a laptop rather than the ODM just receive some hand-me-down specs and are on their own completely.
