I have a DV4000 which, for the past 3 days, has been freezing on me when returning from hibernation. Most of the time, it'll go in and out of hibernation just fine, but sometimes it will freeze on power up, only lighting the power lights and buttons and showing a blank screen. No error message or splash screen.
I tried to figure out what I may have dont to cause this, and I remembered removing the battery from the laptop while it was in hibernation. I have done this before with no problem, but these two times that I have I've had the computer freeze on me. One day I left it alone for an hour and it fixed itself and put it into hibernation numerous times without any problems. The day after that I had to leave it still for a full day until it turned on perfectly right now, with no problem and even loading the way I had left it.
I thought it might be the battery, but I opened the compartments and checked the RAM and HD just in case and everything seemed fine. What can be the problem?

Hibernation requires no power. It saves everything in RAM to the hard drive so that next time you boot, the computer returns to its previous state. Removing the battery 'during' hibernation could not damage the computer.
Standby is another story, it does not save the contents of RAM to the hard drive. It requires a power supply to maintain the state of the computer in RAM for when you turn it back on. However, even in standby, the hard drive is powered down (no longer spinning) so a power loss should not damage the computer in that case either. -
That's exactly what I thought hibernations and standby is. But the only connection I could find between both of the times my computer froze was taking it to school (where I had a watchful eye on it), turning it on last period, and removing the battery.
Battery removal or not, what can be causing the problem and how can i fix it? -
I don't know what would cause that, but sometimes (rarely) my HP notebook has trouble coming out of standby... like it will seem to power back on but the screen stays blank (but lit). I just hold the power button until it turns off, then it restarts fine. I've never had trouble with hibernation though.

I hold the power button down and try to boot up again to no avail. I'll do it about 10 times until I give up. Thing is, leaving it still for a while fixes itself. I really don't know what it is that happens when I leave it for an extended amount of time, but now I'm afraid to put it into hibernation or to even shut it down.
Does removing the battery while in hibernation damage the notebook?
