Does the dv5z really get THAT hot?

I ordered the dv5z earlier this week but have become concerned because of the number of people on this forum saying, "This laptop gets way hotter than any other laptop I've owned" and such and so forth.

So, for those of you that already own it, does it really get that hot? I work in a relatively small room and have noticed that my current laptop gets pretty hot and makes the room stuffy, so I was hoping to avoid that.

If the dv5z does, in fact, get pretty hot, is there another laptop you guys would recommend? I've already filled out the survey once before, but this is what I'm looking for:

*Something that doesn't get unbearable hot, as I've mentioned
    *$700-900
    *Able to play multimedia efficiently

That's really about it. I won't be gaming with this laptop. And I don't move the laptop around very much at all so I don't think build quality will be a huge issue for me.

Buy the dell 1525 or the studio 15. They are much better than the dv5z.
I own a dv5z and it does run hot, the battery life sucks and it is slow...

Don't listen to SannyG, all he's done since he got here is complain about the dv5z while probably 90% of the people who posted on the official dv5z thread have had positive reviews of it.

From what I've read, it only gets extremely hot if you're using it for intensive purposes, which of course is only natural. If you don't mind spending an extra 50 bucks, you should get a laptop cooler.

It can get a bit hot sometimes, but mines has been running lower temps now. It's not slow and i really love the design and build quality, speakers are excellent i must say...for a laptop that is. Expect it to run around 50-55c but after hours of use can reach 60's.

HP has had this issue for while now. This is nothing new, the notebook runs quite warm but it's not like something terrible like a Mac. Even my HP runs quite warm.
A cooler would solve the problem.

60C? You mean overall? If so thats not THAT hot, well, not compared to the 80C+ that i hit on a regular basis.

Mine idles at 60C. It's definitely hotter than my 4 year old Asus (which idles at 49C at the exact same time, same room).

Isn't AMD supposed to be the cooler processor anyways? That's what I noticed from my comparisons.

No, Intel is supposed to run cooler.

I would figure that a 45nm 25W Penryn C2D would be cooler than a 65nm 35W Athlon/Turion. My TL-58 idles around 47C, but has the BIOS update that makes the fan speed fairly aggressive. Maybe it depends on the unit's configuration and chassis.......

Well speaking on the processor only, Intels run cooler than AMDs usually, but when you take in hand a systems configuration, it depends on many more that just the CPU itself.

I just received my dv5z this week and am surprised and concerned with it's temps. Mine was sitting in "standby" mode overnight, and all I've done so far is read these forums for a few minutes, and my CPU temps are at 70C (158F), and steadily rising. Last night, after playing a very NON-graphics/processor intensive game, it reached 87C (188F). Too hot for comfort, both for my lap, and (I would think) the internal components.

That being the case, I too, am looking into returning it and finding something else. Problem is, I cannot find another laptop that gets me the same "bang-for-buck" as the dv5z. The search continues...

If you read this thread you'll notice that there are still mixed responses. Most people say that their dv5z doesn't get that hot, but then you have 2-3 that throw out some really high numbers (158F).

I'm not extremely technical, and I haven't used Vista on a laptop before, but could this be a power saver configuration issue? For instance, the people whose laptops run hotter might have it in some kind of "Performance Mode" or something.

We'll see what happens when I get mine. On a side note, someone recommended getting the Studio 15 instead but I've heard bad things about them. First off, Dell has been delaying orders left and right...it's taking some people over a month to receive their laptop. Secondly, numerous people have commented that the slot loading optical drive is extremely loud and, even more importantly, won't recognize some CDs/DVDs and won't always eject the disc. I started looking around for something else when I read about those problems.

Looks like I'll have 21 days with the dv5z to decide for myself.

You bring up a valid point, something that I had been thinking previously. I've seen numerous posts from users proclaiming to use Vista's "High Performance" profile setting, but can't figure out why someone would wish to do this. It is synonymous to XP's "Always On" setting, which is targeted toward desktops. High Performance mode disables the cpu's SpeedStep/PowerNow functionality, causing it to run at full throttle incessantly. Without any throttling comes severe heat buildup, which is a notebook's worse enemy.

Why would anyone want an idling cpu to be running full blast? It sounds rather self-defeating...........

Personally, I have my power settings on "Balanced". Now, what this means in regards to my heat complaints, I have no idea. Just thought I'd share since it was brought up.

I use "Balanced" as well, and I think the "HP Recommended" default power scheme is just a minor tweak of Vista's native "Balanced" setting......

Ok, here's a question: What is the best program to monitor temps? Right now I have HWMonitor. It shows temps for the processor, and something listed as ACPI, but I don't even know what that is. Based on screenshots I've seen of the program, shouldn't it provide more data?

I use HWMonitor as well, and assumed those ACPI readings were from thermal diodes on the system board (but I may be wrong). Aside from that and the cpu, gpu & hdd temps, that is all I've seen........

Mine doesn't show GPU or HDD temps. Only ACPI and Processor (both cores).

Hmmm. Strange that it detects everything on the CQ50Z, but not your DV5Z (which is just as new). Is it the most recent version?

Regardless of whether or not I keep my dv5z, I'm buying a laptop cooler off Amazon.

It's called the Xpad and it's only available through a private seller. It looks like something that some guy in a garage patented, but there are 104 reviews on Amazon and 90% of them are 5 stars.

It's $25, not a bad price for a laptop cooler. There's no fan involved either, which is a good thing because those usually end up failing after a couple weeks/months.

Just go check it out if you're interested. I think it'll be a good deal.

Holy schnykes! That is ridiculously hot. My cpu temp, after playing intensive 3d games is between 30-50 c, gpu sometimes gets up to 60. But 87!! on a regular basis will kill your computer.
