Alright I have my friends laptop that I'm trying to repair. It's an HP Pavilion dv9700 model # dv9910us
For some reason this laptop will not boot into Windows, it gets stuck at the "Windows loading" screen. Once in a while it will boot into windows.
I have formatted the hard drive that had vista on it and installed Windows 7 and the same thing happens. Sometimes boots, but most of the time it doesn't. Another issue this laptop has is that the dvd/cd rom is not showing up at all, I can't even boot cd's from it. I've tried many different solutions I found online and none of them worked. Had to use a USB stick to install windows 7.
Also, when the laptop does boot into windows and the lid gets closed then opened again it will not go back into windows the screen stays black, holding the power button won't even turn it off until the battery is taken out.
So is it a motherboard issue? I looked it up and the laptop uses this mobo 459567-001, is there a different model that can be used that won't have these problems?

If you haven't already tried take out the ram one at a time and see if that will let it boot up correctly

You’re friends notebook is likely one of the last of the tens of thousands of notebooks afflicted with the Nvidia disease (failed ball-grid array solders) that resulted in a class-action against Nvidia. If you’ve completed all the usual trouble-shooting steps, as a last resort try placing the unit in your freezer (yes freezer) for about 20 minutes. Take it out and, without delay, plug it into power and try to boot to the BIOS … or directly to the OS if you’ve completed the fresh install. If it BOOTs, it will likely run until the next restart when it will once again fail to BOOT.

If this turns out to be your case… you’re pretty much toast. You could attempt a reflow of the motherboard (search) or get a new motherboard but even then the replacement will have the defect and a reflow is usually short lived. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news for your friend but… it is what it is.

    Best, Dave
