Ok, I'm getting the Compaq Presario CQ61-424SA quite soon.

I was wondering I could hook up my PS3 to this laptop, and use its 720p screen as a monitor?

If I cannot, what external hardware do I need to do this?

Manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01855194.pdf. - Make sense of it, if you can. :)

Direct connect as a 'dumb' monitor is not possible.

You need to run a video capture device (most likely usb connect) and then video software to show the input (your ps3) in a window.

Will probably look like crap and the refresh-time of the 'display' will probably leave a lot to be desired. If you go this route, don't be tempted to cheap out on the video cap hardware. The quality of video cap hardware/software is directly linked to the price in this case. In theory the same video cap hardware could also be used as a TV tuner. Search on newegg.com for examples.

It will be cheaper to buy a larger/dedicated monitor for gaming and use it as necessary as a second/external monitor for your laptop.

Thanks for your help! Shame it's not anywhere as easy I thought it would be. :(
