It has been posted recently in some HP threads (particularly the Current/Prospective dv6000t owners thread) concerning problems with the Slimtype DVD A DS8AZH. Yet, I noticed these are all pretty recent posts, all within the past month, if I'm not mistaken.

However, more was raised about this drive in Dell threads months ago.

This is what I'm wondering. Is this a new DVD drive to HP's and that's why few have written about it? Or, is no one having trouble writing with their Slimtype DVD A DS8AZH's?

I have this drive in my dv6275us, but I haven't burned any DVD's yet.

    Thanks.

Well, is there a specific problem that we should look for? I have that drive but I haven't really done anything with it yet except to rip some DVD's and those all turned out well.

From what I've read, the issue seems to be writing to DVD. For more information concerning the issues, you may want to check out posts 936 and 939 on this page: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=75470&page=94. On the next page or two are additional posts.

I simply ask the question to try to see if others who have this drive (which I also have) have found the drive to function well and that, hopefully, is the reason I haven't read much about it.

I just got an HP notebook (which I hate) and my CD drive will not work. In the device manager I can see there is a problem but I uninstall drivers but cant get it to work. What a drag. Any suggestions??

    Hello everybody,
I am the man that experienced some problems with the DV6200 internal recorder. Here is the whole story:

The last 10-12 years, I used all types of Verbatim media with a big variety of desktop recorders (Plextor IDE, Plextor SCSI, Yamaha, Teac,Waitec, NEC etc) and I have never experienced any kind of problem. I have come to trust them a lot.

First I want to say that my notebook’s drive is a MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ-850S. It is probably a Panasonic drive renamed. The firmware version is 1.05
Unfortunately when I first tried to burn some data compilation or .iso files on various Verbatim and TDK CD-RWs 10x disks, all operations failed no matter what software I used. Initially I thought of Vista compatibility issue but when I tried with Nero v7.7.5.1 , ImgBurn 2.2.0.0 and Roxio software that came with the notebook I realised that this was not the case. All failed.

So I started to fear I had a crappy drive. Fortunately I was able to burn some TDK DVD-RWs and Verbatim DVD-R disks so after numerous attempts I came to the conclusion that there is a serious compatibility problem with many brands of CD-RWs disks only (???). At the moment that is my conclusion but I am not totally sure yet. I think it is a shame that this recorder have these incompatibility issues with so many disks and I can say that it is a low quality drive.

I just hope that in future, they resolve this issues with a new firmware version. Up to now I am still trying to find a compatible brand of CD-RWs disks to work with this recorder. The only one that burned ok is an very old Verbatim CD-RW 4x disk.

The drive works ok as a reader.

What HP notebook do you have, and why do you hate it?

Does your CD drive not read CD's, much less write?

    i think i m facing same problem with my dv6200 cto .....
my dvd drive is ... Slimtype DVD A DS8AZH ....
    1. verbatim dvd-r 8x failed (i was trying to burn recovery discs)
    2. tdk cd-r worked well for 4 discs ... 5 th failed ... again worked well for rest of the discs
    3.verbatim dvd+rw 4x ... burned perfectly (data files)
4.again tried verbatim dvd-r 8x with same data files ... failed twice

i download drive firmware checkup utility ... it says
    Slimtype DVD A DS8AZH ... firmware version ... NH61
    is this compatibility issue?
    or any hardware problem?

hmmm...I don't think I've had trouble with my burner so far. I've burn the recovery DVD-Rs (really cheap branded, it can't get worse than those) and I've burned CD-RWs (also really old and generic brand, can't be worse than those either). None of those had any trouble.

    Edit: I also have a dv6200 CTO

I understand that the Ritek discs are working fine. They were also mentioned in the thread where I found the common CD-RW issues with that drive. I'll post the exact CD-RWs here if they are detailed in the thread.

No listing of the exact Riteks, but they are the ones the guys all seemed to get working. I am not terribly sure if they make CD-RWs, but Taiyo Yuden is another top notch brand that may be worth trying, however, they are more expensive then Riteks or Verbs.

    Thanks for your advice.
I will try some Taiyo Yuden media.I trust this brand too.I never had problems with it.Unfortunately it is hard to find here in Italy...

Update: I found a new Verbatim CD-RW 8x-12x that worked fine!It seems that only the older Verbatim CD-RW 8x-10x plus some old TDK CD-RW 10x didn't work.

Al last, I think that the recorder isn't faulty. Just a bit low quality and very sensitive to the media brand used. You have to find a brand that works and stick with it ;)

I'd suggest trying Taiyo Yuden, Ritek, or Verbatim. I am positive Taiyo is available in India, and I am pretty sure Ritek or Verbatim should be available.

i understand all of that but you wouldnt suggest just sending the machine into hp and asking for a drive from a different company? my last HP had the TSST Corp drive which i understand is toshiba. That worked fine with any media i tried. I've never had a problem like this with any desktop DVD or cd burners ive had since 1998 and this is just strange..

I wouldn't try to send it back to HP for that reason because:

1). If you don't really have a serious problem HP will charge you for the repair + shipping

2). HP probably won't authorize a repair just for that reason

3). HP might not have any other brand drives available.

    TJ,

You could try. The drive does not work correctly on all media, so you might be able to get them to replace it. However, they might just give you a list of "compatible media" and bill you for service.

    SBR,
    1. if it does not burn, it is a serious problem, since it is sold as a "DVD BURNER" ;)

    2. They might, or they might send a list of compatible media.

    3. My DV6000T (bought this February) houses a TSSTComp drive which is, as suggested by TJ, a Toshiba drive, and a pretty nice burner. It is a bit slow, but it is fairly clean.

Yes I have the SLIMTYPE DVD A DS8AZH drive and its crappy as hell.
I think HP ships with inferior dvd drives.

What is the best dvd drive for laptops like hp dv6000 series.?
    Is it tsscorp?
    what about mat****a.?

with my SLIMTYPE DVD A DS8AZH, I can not burn any DVDs. All fail giving out a "power calibration error" in Nero.
The most no. of dvds that i burned must be around 3 or 4.

Anyone got a fix for that?

Ok since the last guy didn't want to share his fix to this overwhelmingly annoying problem with the same computer/dvd drive. I've been through all the forums and all the dvd firmware upgrade sites you name it.

Somewhere along the way I came across a site where some techie was talking about disassembling the dvd drive itself and cleaning off the 2 rods that the lens travels on...

you know...while it reads, or writes your media.

So, anyway, I took out the drive, started unscrewing the screws from the bottom, removed the metal plate, and proceeded to grab the lens and slide it back and forth.

Yes, i noticed that the gliding motion could have been smoother so i wiped it down with a Q-tip, and then grabbed some of my boyfriends SEMI-SYNTHETIC DURA-BLEND grease (which he uses for his car/parts/etc) and put a tiny bit on the other end of that Q-tip and smeared it on the 2 little rods.

And once again grabbed the lens and began sliding it back and forth, till it seemed to be smother than before i started.

Now I understand that most people would recommend that you should be very gentle and so forth but at this point I was over it and figured it's not working for me anyways so who cares. and guess what people. I reassembled it, slid it back into my computer and boom pow bang whatta ya know reads writes and fully co-operates with my every demanding request. all media cheap or over-priced, cd/cd-+rw dvd-+r dvd+-rw whatever...

So that's my fix...use at own risk, i was at wits end...and it worked.

Oh by the way before i removed it from the laptop I restarted it in safe mode and uninstalled all my drivers for it including ide controller channel0 and channel 1.

hope this helps someone, i know that i looked at a lot of posts and tried a lot of things and just wanted to share what worked.

Wow! It's incredible that this is the solution for the crappy Slimtype DVD.

A quesion for Lucieloo: Will your fix work with a Slimtype DVD A DS8A 1H Lightscribe, or just with the DS8A ZH model?
Could you please post a link to the solution you have followed?

A small tip I have found out for those who can't seem to burn DVDs: My DVD burner will not burn a DVD -R disk but will burn fine a DVD +R disk.
