Hey, I'm wondering which HP models have an on-screen display for their volume controls, touchpad ON/OFF, brightness, battery, etc. If you could please reply with the model and which OSDs it has, that would be really helpful. I recently ordered a zt3000 and just read about the lack of a volume OSD on that machine. I was wondering if this was the case for all machines or just this specific model. Thanks in advance.

I was just curious mainly. I remember using a friends Presario 2100 series and it did have this OSD. It's kinda nice to have some stuff pop up, but not paramount. I have also used other laptops that has BIOS OSDs for things like the battery and brightness adjustments. Those were mainly older though. Either way, this is more of a point of interest rather then an actual requirement.

The zx5000 and family do not have it either. I wouldn't be suprised though to find a freeware or shareware program that would add an OSD if you really wanted one. Don't know why you need one? Perhaps you could fill me in on that part.

Yeah, I agree its somewhat nice, but it also uses a lot more resources for almost no benefit. Whenever I use it on my desktop while doing something that is graphic intensive it slows up the system for a few seconds until the osd disappears.

Yeah, now that you mention it, that makes a lot of sense. I have another question that is specifically for you and any other user of the zx5000. I am wondering how many of you use the wired ethernet of that machine and download using bittorrent. I have read some disturbing things over at the x1000forums about this and I am seeking a replacement just in case this becomes unbearable. You may be thinking that I want to pirate, but I mainly only use Bittorent for game updates. With this issue arising, the zx5000 is looking even more enticing...that's granted that is doesn't have similar problems or other unique ones that are this catastophic. I don't have wireless and don't plan to for a little while. I will be using wired for almost it's entire first month of use. If this lockup becomes a problem for me, I have almost no doubt that i will send the machine back.

I have downloaded a couple things with bittorrent such as Linspire, and a few demos.

ok, well I guess that settles that because I have been hearing that the zt3000's network card dies to the point of needing a restart when using bittorrent. This is the very first thing I plan to test after receiving the machine. If I can't stand it, it will be on it's way back to HP. I'm so sad that this had to come up because I will lose the shipping costs and have to pay shipping to return the stupid thing. Even more so, it took so long for the zt3000 to be built and shipped, that I don't know how well I can handle another similar wait.

Sorry for all the questions Quikster, but I am wondering what driver version you are using for your wired network. Also, what is the make and model of the adapter? Thanks.

kf_man,
It's weird that you mentioned the lockups on the ZT3000 units using BitTorrent. I had an NX7000 wich is an identical platform build as the ZT3000 with almost the same config except it has the Compaq name associated with it. I also got lockups using Bittorrent and couldn't figure out what the problem was, I even used 2 different bittorrent clients with no luck. I guessed that it was the OS that came with the unit (HP tweaks) that was causing all the problems. What I noticed was that if you did multiple downloads at a time and left it overnight it would lockup. Short/quick downloads seem to be ok. I did have to reboot the notebook after every lockup, I couldn't just do an IP reset, wouldn't access the network card after the lock. There could just be a few things causing the problem, the OS load from HP, the network drivers or the network card. Since these are most likely the main suspects, you can try reloading the OS from your own XP CD, try different network driver versions, or, if it's the card itself, try using the wireless. If none of these suggestions work, it may just be a pure compatibility problem with the notebook platform & the bittorrent software.
I hope one of these suggestions works for you, it would definately be a shame if you had to return the unit because of this one minor issue. It's too late for me, mine went back a couple months back because of other problems they couldn't fix.
Good luck,
-Vb- -
Yeah, I'm hoping, but I've been reading a thread on the x1000forums and they have been tackling this issue since early September. That doesn't instill too much hope for me. How long did you keep that notebook for? How easy was the return? What did you get to replace it? Thanks.

Yeah, I actually have the extended warrenty on my desk right now. It's the regular one and I'm waiting for a laptop to use it with. I'm hoping for the best. I think I can live with the network issues, but we'll see.

Yeah, it does sometimes take them a while to resolve problems, but if you report the issue to the customer support team, they will have a record of the issue & when it started, therefore giving you a bit more leverage later if you want to return/exchange the unit. The return window is usually 30 days.
I had my unit for about 6 months and went back & forth with testing and replacement units without any real solutions, so I decided to return the unit instead of getting a different model, since this was the only slim widescreen model at the time. The return process was fairly easy and the HP staff I dealt with were great, they went that extra mile to help me. After all that, I ended up getting a refund on the unit. To this day, I still have not bought a new notebook, in fact, I've started using my old P3-600 Toshiba, which has been rock solid since I bought it 3 years ago, not a single repair to this day. []...knock on wood! The one thing I would recommend if you do get the unit, is to get the 3 year warranty either the regular or the accidental damage. I know a lot of people may tell you it's a waste of money, but for an extra $100 (regular), you get an extra 2 years of security if anything fails, personally, I think it's worth it. With the accidental damage, you get 3 years of coverage even if the damage is your fault (you may want to get the rules on this first).
