Throughout the forums, there are a few reports that when logging out or going to standby/hibernate certain HP computers (like my nc8430) will change its screen resolution when you bring the computer back.

This is mainly the reason why I've stuck with the standard HP drivers thus far, which is less than ideal considering those video drivers are several months old and are missing some useful bug fixes.

Anyway, here's what you need to do:
    1) Go to the Gaming Forum Updating Your Video Card Drivers sticky to get the direct link to the ATI Catalyst Drivers.
    2) Follow the directions in that thread and install the latest ATI drivers.
    3) After rebooting again, go to Start->Run->Regedit
    4) Search for all instances of ExtEvent_EnableAutoDisplayConfig and change the value from ( 1) to ( 0).
    5) Reboot again.

Now, when closing the LCD, hibernating, logging out, or going to standby your PC should not change it's resolution!
