It has been 6 months since my last cpu fan cleaning. Done it today on zv5000z by unscrewing the CPU/fan cover and removing all the dust that was covering the brass vents from inside with compressed air screen cleaner.
Before:
HD 37 oC
CPU 43 oC // Athlon 3700+ :amd64:
After:
HD 33 oC
CPU 37 oC
Doesn't it compare favorably to CPU undervolting?![]()
Now, temps are like on day 1 when I first received it 1.5 years back. Check whether yours needs a similar treatment!![]()
zv5000z with Athlon seems like the coolest running notebook in history (except for the underpowered ULV ones, or am I wrong?) Both the bottom and the top are not even warm to touch, and it's 3700+.
I think HP was wise to release the zv5000z series after ze series that idled at ~70 oC CPU, mostly because they were designed to work with fan off for 99% of normal use and hence were really quiet.
Having fan always ON in later zv and zx series made a huge success in HP's heat management but added some intermittent noise/chance fun will wear early.
So, naturally HP started to think that heat is not a problem anymore... and designed newer notebooks that had both, idle temps in the 50+s and fan ON frequently.

P.S. update - while working in Word and web browsing, I see right now
32 oC HD/36 oC CPU.
I'm amazed
BTW, it's a 80G 5400 rpm HD. -
Yep, I agree. Preventive maintainence every 6 months or so should keep the laptop chugging along for a long time and I also agree the zv5000/r3000 series are one of the coolong running laptops made. My Acer runs on a average around 45C and the case being warm in many spots with the fan turning on/off intermitantly. The Compaq is happy to run around 33C with the fan on and cool. Ofcourse these temps are when just for regular browsing and listening to music.

Nice job - cleaning out the fans definitely helps a lot. I do it to my desktop once every month, keeps it nice and clean, plus it runs quieter. Same for my laptop - I do that about every two months. Runs great.
Don't forget: simple maintanance = less HEAT
