I recently contacted Mcafee about a problem I was having. They told me steps to do and I did them, then restarted the PC and everything went to hell from there. I then got error after error from Mcafee and Internet would not work. I did system restore and now mcafee is missing files. Should I format my dv5000z and start over or go through contacting mcafee again and waiting on hold for a hour?

I am leaning toward formatting my pc and starting over.

Is your only problem at this point that McAfee is missing files? If so, just get rid of it completely and switch to AVG or another free (and better) piece of software. If you're having more problems, post the actual error messages and maybe someone can help you.

I will uninstall mcafee and reinstall it. Is AVG really as good as it sounds? I would be willing to give it a 2nd chance or what is a better free one?

AVG free is way better than McAfee in some ways. Not only is it not a resource hog, it picks up more viruses and kills them quicker than McAfee ever could. There are many free antivirus options on the net such as Avast, but AVG is really simple and wont put a massive hit on your notebook.

Will I need to download a firewall then? I am going to give AVG a 2nd chance because McAfee is really making me made.

I tried to uninstall Mcafee but it wont uninstall all the way and it locked my internet so I can't connect. I am going to call HP and see if they can help me.

you might have to go into the registry and manually take out the Mcafee. Since you have XP,the built in firewall works and if you have a router thats another physicall firewall aswell.

    Hi Eric,
I run Avast on all my machines and have never had a problem with it. It doesn't take make space and it updates automatically. You do have to re-register yearly but then alot of programs that you pay for are that way. I fully agree with Ross. Here is a link to Avast's site.

I am going to try Avast. I had AVG 2 years ago and it would never delete the viruses.

I deleted mcafee from the local machine and current user in the registery, do I have to delete it from anywhere else?
