I am trying to complete the downgrade of my Pavilion dv2282ea to Windows XP. Turned my HD to IDE, everything worked, but still have two devices with no drivers working: PCI Device (modem?) and SM Bus Controller (audio?). I believe these drivers come from Conexant. HP site does not have these drivers in the dv2282ea section, so I followed the support's recommendation to use dv2082ea drivers. New problem: used #33543, #32823 and #33340, none of them worked. I tried also Vista's drivers #34387 and #34777 as a last resort, no success.
I think the Conexant chipset here is the Venice.
Can someone help me to become a happy user of a HP notebook with XP? The computer is speechless now.
-
You think it is Venice? Can you verify it in your Device Manager?
Regardless of whether you have Venice or Waikiki chipset, the driver support for Xp is certainly looking better at this point. Instead of search for dv2282ea. You should search for dv2000t or dv2000z. They tend to yield better result than a specific model. Even better, you should search for "dv2000t cto" or "dv2000z cto" -
Tks a lot for your quick reply. Device manager says: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27DA and other letters come afterwards. Probably VEN means Venice...
The dv2000t cto shows drivers #33543 and #32823, I already tried them with no success. The dv200z cto is a AMD processor notebook, anyway I downloaded of the its drivers, also no success... -
Well, your problem is that HP changed from using the Conexant "Waikiki" chipset for the dv2000t and dv21000t machines to the Conexant "Venice" chipset for the dv2200t machines. At the moment, dv2000t and dv2100t users have an XP driver, but no Vista one, and dv2200t users have a Vista driver, but not an XP one. Go figure.
I would try the dv9000t and dv6000t XP audio drivers. (You will need to install the Microsoft HD Audio subsystem package first on XP.) I may be wrong, but I think one or both uses the "Venice" codec and might work.
Edit: Per your above reply... VEN means VENDOR. You need to install the Microsoft HD Audio package first. Then you should be able to install the Conexant driver package... if there's one that matches your hardware. -
Tks a lot, well, I succesfully installed the MS HD Audio package (sp33566) and after that, the original Vista drivers #34387 and #34777 were 'successfully' installed: the question marks in the device manager disappear but the sound does not work. So the problem still exists. Drivers from dv6000t and dv9000t do not work...
-
Have you tried to right click on the "?" marks to automatically search for the driver? Have you tried the Conexant web site?
-
As kanehi said, there may be audio drivers on Windows update... if not, or if those don't work right (as they often don't for Conexant audio devices), then try this driver: here . I edited the dv6000t audio driver to recognize the Venice codecs in the dv2200 series. I can't test to see if it works (I have a dv2100 series), but it may be the best bet until/unless HP releases an official driver.
Let me know how it goes. -
Dear Kanehi and JadedRaverLA,
Windows Update did not work either, no drivers found. I tried yesterday Conexant website, they show some drivers for generic notebook AC'97 modems, but did not work. I could not find audio drivers there. Conexant also says that the OEM should be contacted, it means HP...
JadedRaverLA, I will try your driver tonight because the laptop is at home. Tks in advance. -
Dear JadedRaverLA, you're my hero, the sp34204 you sent worked. I started dancing here. Thank you so much. Anyway, is it worth to write an e-mail to the HP support to ask for a driver?
Once again, thank you very much for your help!! -
thanks for that driver. it works on pavilion dv2200 cto. i spent some time with hp tech over the chat and they send something that never worked.
thanks again for link.
to JadedRaverLA: how do you adjust the drivers? -
Glad that driver worked for you guys.
mpr -- What do you mean by "how do you adjust the drivers?"
fredshu -- It's worth a shot, I suppose, but then you have to deal with HP support. I would imagine that eventually they may get to it -- likely by doing exactly what I did to an existing driver. -
I have bought HP Pavilion dv2000t and I want downgrade to XP. Can you reupload your driver to another host because I can't download. Thanks in advance.
-
I have donwloaded. My problem has solved. You're expert
-
I have the exact same problem, but mine is with the dv9207. I've tried many different drivers on the HP website, but they don't have an XP driver for laptop. I tried the one you posted and it didn't work either. Any help? Thanks!

Akilleus -- welcome to the forums!
All the XP drivers for your system can be found here. For audio, you need to install the Microsoft UAA Bus driver, before you can install the audio driver -- you'll get a MEDIA error otherwise. -
Wow, fast response. I've already tried that driver and I have installed the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio. I don't know what the problem is.
-
What happens when you try to use that driver? Is there an error code or anything? Or does it install but not work?
-
Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver
-
Akilleus -- it looks like the updated Hardware ID (for the 9200 series) just needs to be added back into the old driver. I think I have a working driver: try my modded version here.
Let me know if that works. -
It gives me the same message
My device instance is: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27DA&SUBSYS_30BB103C&REV_02\3&B1BFB68&0&FB
if that helps. When I add "%HdAudioFunctionDriver.5045.DeviceDesc% = HdAudModel,HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8086&DEV_27DA&SUBSYS_30BB103C&REV_02\3&B1BFB68&0&FB" into the inf file it act like it's going to work, but then it says failure. -
Try reinstalling the Microsoft UAA driver. That's what that device ID corresponds to... not a specific audio codec.
-
It don't know how to uninstall the Microsoft UAA driver, and when I try to install it again, after I accept the EULA, it acts like it's going to install something, but then closes.
-
Have you rebooted since installing the UAA driver? It should find new hardware... and then you would need the actual audio driver.
-
It made me reboot right after I installed it, but I'll try again. In the device manager, it says: ?SM Bus Controller
-
You probably need to reinstall the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility. Grab it from HP or directly from Intel here. That should get rid of the "?SM Bus Controller", which may be the problem getting the audio to register.
-
YEA!!!!! Some how I got it to work. I think the main problem was that after I installed the Microsoft UAA drivers, when I rebooted, it moved one of the question marks to a different section of the device manager. Once I found it and said update drivers, it had me update the sound. The sound still didn't work until I installed the conexant modem driver.
Thank you so much for your help JadedRaverLA -
glad you got it going.
-
Akilleus, I am having the exact same problem you have (bought an hp pavillion dv2315nr, hated vista, installed xp over it, no sound drivers). Can you walk me through exactly what you did to get sound to work? Thanks in advance.
-
HI ALL,
I Have similar problem for my laptop(DV2282ea).
I follwed all the above steps but i couldn't able to install correct. It's installed but not working.
Could you please advice any one on this? -
Im having the same problem... I tried using the new Vista drivers and they install but I cannot get audio. I tried the XP ones and they say that it cannot find MEDIA... for both the audio and the modem. Someone has to have a fix for this?!

Dear JadedRaverLA, you' ve saved me too. I´ve bought a new pavilion 2225la in Buenos Aires and after downgrading to XP I was stuck with the lack of audio drivers.
Thanks a lot! -
Hi All,
If anyone's watching this thread and still has a problem with the Conexant HD Audio driver, I have found a solution whilst downgrading my HP dv9640 from VISTA to WinXP.
After installing the Microsof UAA HD architecture, I added the Conexant driver which loaded fine but gave me the dreaded 'This driver cannot start' error. However, after running Driver Magic, a driver update utility, I was offered an alternate driver from Realtek. I installed this and was rewarded with lovely sound from my speakers for the first time since I scrapped Vista.
The driver I used was the sp37605.exe - 5.10.0.5449, which actually downloaded from HP's site, even though it was not the one HP recommended (so HP had the answer to my problem and they didn't even know!). DriverMagic uses it's own locations for download, so I can't post a URL, but if you cut and paste the driver name above and google it, I'm sure you'll find a download somewhere. Alternatively, download and run Driver Magic from SimplisIT and maybe it will find an alternative that works for you. I took out a subscription a few months ago, but I'm sure you can find a demo version which will give you the first 10 downloads free, or similar.
Hope this helps!
