Is it possible to downgrade from the i7 quad to the i5, or to some other more efficient cpu?

Its getting warm where I am and my laptop was so hot last night that I had to let it cool down before I could pick it up. Not to mention that the battery life is hopeless with the i7 no matter how little I do.

If anyone has done this and can confirm it works I'd be most appreciative

it is possible just buy one cpu and insert it there. but you are going to lose 2 slots of ram and a the USB 3.0 because of this move.

I don't think it's possible due another CPU socket and mainbord.

Hmmmm losing USB doesnt sound too fun.... Noone has a bios hack out there to re-enable it?

Do you know what socket is in the envy's? I might go digging through alternative i7 quads.

The i core family uses the same socket.

What you can do is to try to get one of those new batches of quads (the 740qm, 840qm), but I dont see a huge difference in terms of temps.

And currently there is no one that could pull the BIOS hack, so yes you are with what you got already.

and dont forget about the 2 ram slots that you are going to lose too.

Would I lose usb ports all together or just usb3.0? If it was just 3.0 support I could live with that, but I do need my usb ports to actually work.

you would just lose the usb 3.0 speeds... it should still function as a 2.0 port
