does anyone have one of these and successfully downgraded from Windows 7 to XP? I've tried multiple times by slipstreaming the AMD AHCI drivers into the installation, but I haven't had any luck.

What are your reasons for wanting to downgrade to XP? You're dv7 is plenty capable of powering Windows 7.

It'd be better to resolve your issues with Windows 7 then downgrade.

i have a usb capture device from pinnacle. the product is fairly old (around 2002-2003 maybe) and there are no windows 7 drivers for it, and most likely there wont be any for it for a long time, if at all. the only drivers that exist for it are 32/64 bit xp drivers and a 32 bit vista driver, the latter two require a different version of the program that i do not have. the only way for me to use the hardware is if i install windows xp. ive already tried to use the hardware with 7 and it does not work. i have NO CHOICE but to install xp.

Ok, what version of Windows 7 are you using??

I am asking because I was going to suggest that ifyou have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, you could try Windows XP Mode. That's assuming your DV7's CPU is capable of Virtualization. If it is, then try that route before you try to fully downgrade to XP.

Why can't you run the program in compatibility mode in windows 7? Also are you going to downgrade to windows XP just because 1 program doesn't work? Its not worth it you know.. Windows 7 looks better and is faster than XP... just buy a new software...not worth the hassle and all the driver problems to downgrade..

the first thing i thought of was xp mode, but i found out that home premium cant use it, so thats a no go. and its not just the program, its the hardware driver itself. unless a suitable driver is there, 7 still wont recognize the hardware. also, i have enough hdd space to dual boot, so whether windows 7 looks better/is faster is irrelevant to me on this matter, since i can use both anyway. that is, if i can install it.

your DV7 has a nice Turion II CPU so it SHOULD (as long as its enabled in the BIOS) let virtualization work. However, I have yet to see XP Mode be tried on HP Laptops that SHOULD support virtualization, so I really can't tell you for sure. Also the cost of going to 7 Pro is going to be at least $150. That being said I think you could be looking at a really tough time getting XP on this machine, as even if you can get it to install your not going to have an easy time finding drivers.

i guess for the moment, ill have to go with plan b: try to dual boot windows 7 and vista.. this is assuming it should be easier to install vista rather than xp.

In all honesty, yes it will be easier. You should be able to obtain drivers for Vista a LOT easier than drivers for XP. While a lot of people will not recommend Vista, I say whatever works for you. Good Luck.

Although you may have a problem with the dual boot if you install Vista second. You will need to install Vista first, or install a special program to manage your dual boot instead of letting Vista do it. The reason for this is that when you dual boot, you should install the oldert OS first, that way when you install the newest OS, the boot manager will be the newest. If the boot manager is older than the OS, it will likely give you problems.
