I switched on my HP compaq laptop and got the following error message:
'Drivelock HDD Bay Password', together with a graphic image of a key.
As I've not set a password, nor dropped, dinged, or otherwise abused the pc,
I don't know where this has come from!!
I've tried reconfiguring the BIOS settings... no joy!
I've tried to get the disk bypassed by a program (atapwd ( http://www.rockbox.org/lock.html) to sort things out... still no joy as I'm
unable to boot from a cd-rom, or flash drive, I just keep getting the above message.
I've also tried to restore xp pro sp2 via the re-installation disc, but this doesn't recognise any HDD to install to!!
So, what's happened?, Why?, and am I looking to get a new HDD and/or laptop?
I've a year's left of basic warranty (of a 3 year one), and have emailed HP to see what they say!
Any ideas gratefully recieved!
Thanks in anticipation.
p.s this written on a (working) mac!

Hello,
I'm also facing the same problem in hp compaq nc6000. I've not set up a diskdrive password, yet faced with the same problem on starting the system.
On google search, found a lot of discussion whether to throw the hdd or not? No real help ?
Did you get any help ? Could you resolve it ? Please advise if u've got yours working. -
have you done anything in the past that you think may have caused this? or any errors the last time you used it, or installed any programs? -
Thank you for the response.
In my case, couldnt recollect any installs that may lead to hdd pswd enabling. didnt get any system messages also.
When it displays the hdd password screen, i'm able to step into BIOS setup. When i give the windows admin password, no error shows up, but it takes me to a blank screen. Ctrl+Alt+Del works from there to shutdown the system.

Wasnt there a virus a while ago that set the SATA passwords on hard disks? Maybe it is something like that.

May be pulling the CMOS battery for a few minutes might fix the problem
