Drivers for ATI 5650 and 6630 for HP Envy 14

    Troubleshooting/Help:
To find what driver version you are running now:
    1. Go to start
    2. type device manager and choose Device Manager
    3. Under display drivers, double click "AMD Radeon HD 6500M/5600/5700 Series"
    4. click the driver tab

If you run into problems during or after driver installation, follow these steps:
    1. download stock AND latest driver (and 11.2 if Envy 14 10XX)
    2. disconnect from internet and shut down
    3. go to safe mode.
    4. go to device manager and remove the drivers for both Intel and ATI cards and choose not to save the driver software.
    5. restart.
    6. open any ATI driver update setup file and choose remove all ATI software.
    7. restart.
    8. install stock.
    9. restart then install 11.2 drivers - only for Envy 14 10XX and other laptop models that have problems without 11.2
    10. restart.
    11. install latest driver found on this post.

Would these work on non-Envy 14 5650 and other HP ATI cards?

Yes. These are official drivers from ATI that the detection software would download. The problem with switchable graphics is that ATI's detection software refuses to identify the graphics card and provide drivers for it.

    Good post.

I recently decided to update my drivers and had a confusing 2 hours getting my drivers working.

I currently have 11.5a installed with working switchable graphics.

When I did a reinstall of win 7, I only installed the ATI 11.5 drivers directly from there site and switchable graphics works fine. So I don't think you need to install the HP ones at all, unless there's some kind of feature that comes with the HP ones that I don't know about.

When I tried installing 11.5 from ATI's website, nothing at all was updated for some reason so I had to do 11.5a. I was coming from stock > 11.4 > 11.5. Im not sure about skipping the HP drivers, though you may be right,

That's probably because Windows automatically detected the intel graphics and installed the drivers for them and some generic ATI ones. I don't think switchable graphics has anything to do with HP Drivers, it's a windows feature which can be accessed when you have 2 graphics cards installed.

OFC if for whatever reason something goes wrong and windows doesn't detect the intel graphics, you'd need to install the HP drivers first for them and then install the ATI Drivers.

Its not a built in windows feature because it is controlled by and in ati's software. The later ATI driver packages probably now detect Intel graphics installed by windows or user and adjust the software to enable switchable graphics. The stock HP drivers include both ATI and Intel drivers because it is the only download available for display/graphics from HP's website and the SWSetup folder.

So let me understand, Lets say from a fresh W7 install

    1. Install HP/Intel Combo driver from HP (SP50656.exe)
    2. Install 11.5b Hotfix

    3. All done?

Last time I went from stock HP drivers to 11.2, I still had switchable graphics, but all my games ran much SLOWER than on 10.8. I had the same settings in game (Bulletstorm, Crysis 2) and it ran like . Uninstalled and went back to 10.8.

Can someone give me any success stories with the newest AMD drivers?

11.5 is fine for me. FPS's have stayed pretty much constant throughout all of AMD's drivers for me as well

Doesn't hurt to give it a try

Thanks so much! Rep to you my friend. I've tried so many other methods and they never worked. Always had to restart in safe mode and restore. Started me out with the black screen of death but after a restart, it's updated and smooth sailing!

    Thanks

I'm on a clean install of W7 and I have installed the HP's oldest video drivers for Envy 14 (ATI 10.1 I think). Do I have to install HP video drivers again to update to 11.5b?

You don't need to install the HP drivers. If you run the windows update after a clean install it will automagically install the appropriate intel driver. Then download ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver to install the drivers to use switchable graphics and the discreet graphics. Its a 79.7 MB file. Don't download the 1MB file because it will say the file doesn't work for your computer.

I've done this a few times and I haven't ever had an issue

That only updates the CCC, there's no driver package in that link. So your driver is still whatever you installed it with.

You were supposed to read and use the link in the first post.

Then how come I can use the discrete graphics if its only CCC? I never installed HP drivers I just let windows take care of it.

You can check driver version in windows device manager. And the 11.5 driver from ati only updated control center and not driver.

    @pez
Because CCC has the completed switchable graphic software support since 11.2 , that's why it works.

But the Individual links offered in AMD site, does not include the driver.

You are still using the older 10.8 driver.

The official string for 11.5 is 8.85, the OEM HP Equivalent is 8.84
    --------
The only problem for AMD for Intel switchable model is pretty much a legal reason. They are simply not allowed to package the Intel drivers with theirs, the same with Nvidia.

I get the same exact information as above. I uninstalled my ATI control center through windows and restarted. I installed the HP drivers linked in the first page. I restarted. I installed the 11.5 drivers from ATI's page. I restarted. I still see the same information.

    Did it not get updated?

No, your intel driver will not update. Both AMD and Nvidia cannot integrate Intel drivers directly, but they can though OEM venders. Luckily, Nvidia does not depend on the Intel driver version so they could be installed separately.

Updating without syncing the intel driver is a risk also a risk to the laptop itself. But most of us going a get a new laptop in a year or two anyways, wouldn't care much of what the long term damage anyways.

But something that isn't supported directly by OEM anymore for more than 6 months is worth the gamble.

    -------

Try doing the instruction in the first page. I think you can do leaps from 10.2->11.2+->11.5b

I did a clean install and installed the stock drivers, then the 11.5b fix.

I play a game called City of Heroes, and often during gameplay I would get random reboots.. but this last time I got a "driver stopped responding but has recovered" error.

Do you think there is anything else I can do so this error will no longer occur?

seems to work fine (not that I've played a game with 'em yet)

so they at least seem to install fine on top of 11.5b

Thank you for this post. I had the stock drivers and upgraded directly to 11.6. After installing, I tested switching but it wouldn't switch after putting in my battery and disconnecting the AC power cord. Almost panicked but first rebooted and tried again. Switchable graphics seem to be working after the reboot. Now I'm just commenting to say thanks, and added a reputation thing for you, whatever that does.

Uninstall both intel and ati drivers from device manager (you might have to switch between them) then install the stock hp drivers (second in list) then you can update ati drivers to latest

    Hi

    I have a 5650 Envy 14

So remove all drivers and then install:

Stock HP/ATI: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
    Driver version: 8.771.1.0
    09/09/2010
    (Source SWSetup Folder)

    Then 11.5b?

    Hi

I uninstalled the drivers individually from device manager.

Install HP/Intel Combo driver from HP (SP50656.exe)

    and tehn 11.5b

However, checking device manager for 5650 it says 8.771.1.0,09/09/2010?

    eh?

audio through HDMI is handled via ATI HDMI output thus it has to do with the 5650 drivers

    Hi guys,
I tried to update my drivers to the latest HP video drivers, but I have a unique problem. After updating from 10.3 to the the latest HP drivers, my fonts become blurry and weird. I don't know how it happened, and trying 11.6 and 11.7 did not work either. Anyone knows what's going on?

Please look at the attached image. The screenshot on the left has abnormal, blurry font, while the one on the right is normal.
