Dropped my computer and now it wont boot up. Instead it just keeps turning on and off. The screen is also cracked. HP tells me that the hard drive or motherboard have been shifted with the impact and are not being detected properly causing the power cycling. They are offering to fix it for $400. I would like to attempt to make the repairs myself, if possible. Any advice would be great.
Thanks

brianstretch Notebook Virtuoso
Get the service guide from hp.com, take apart the notebook and see what's what. Don't forget to remove the battery first and keep it out while you're testing. Worst case, pull the HD, transfer the data to another computer, format the HD, sell the computer as broken on eBay for the parts dealers to tear down and put the money towards a new laptop.

I was bored and checked ebay for some random reason.
I'm not sure what model your notebook is, but I found something.
Here is an auction for another DV6500 that works. The LCD is broken so you could just throw in your hard drive and LCD panel to get it going. You could submit a best offer of like $100-200 and most likely win.
