ok i was going to ask a few questions in the (upgrade disc thread) but there are already too many pages as it is.
so i just got my upgrade disc an hour ago in the mail and wanted to ask a few questions to those who dual booted their Compaq V3000
1. does the keyboard work during the "boot manager"? because on my desktop i have to use another one to choose from xp or vista cause the original keyboard doesent work for some reason.
2. how exactly do you dual boot it without taking the xp key? like installing vista with windows xp untouched? (step by step)
3. how much room does vista need? like a few gigs or what? {I'll use partition magic}
-thanks to those who help![]()

There shouldnt be any problems here. I have dual booted Vista/XP & XP/Ubuntu and never had any issues with this.
Just partition your HDD using Partition Magic and boot with the Vista DVD. When the installer asks where to install Vista just point to your partitioned space. It wont ask for any keys since you have already validated your XP license when you signed up for the express uprade. The DVD is capable of doing a full clean install very similar to a retail DVD.
Minimum of 20GB but I would set aside atleast 35GB+ for Vista. -
wait so ur saying that it wont ask for any key what so ever?
so if i happen to have another laptop without vista i can "install" it there too?
without any validation of somekind? -
No...it wont ask for your XP keys but you will still need to type in your Vista keys.
Technically you are supposed to install it on the machine with which you signed up for but AFAIK there shouldnt be any issues installing it on another system. -
so u mean if i install vista with the same key on 2 different computers and do windows update i would not have any problem what so ever?
-
i tried to change the boot to the vista disc but when it starts to spin it just loads win xp. so can u just load the vista disc within xp and do custom install then choose the other partition?
-
No. Its 1 license 1 computer.
Try changing the boot order in the BIOS to boot from your CD/DVD first before the hard drive. -
ok so i got all that done but how do u run the driver disc without it having to install all the crap bloatware?
-
Also be aware that HP is probably giving out OEM Vista keys. Not only is it 1 license key per computer, OEM keys are non-transferable between computers so it's 1 license per motherboard.
-
just uncheck all the recommended and optional programs and (any drivers you know you wont be needing) during the driver setup process.TwiztOG43 said: ↑ok so i got all that done but how do u run the driver disc without it having to install all the crap bloatware?Click to expand...

but i encountered what seems to be a problem
when install the drivers from the hp drivers disc
the part when i get to "installing NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150" the green bar just keeps going back. i think its been over 50 times now. how long is this supposed to take? i think its been 20 min for me just for this 1 driver! -
I ran into the same issue, also with the 6150 driver, and just quit it after a while. I let the machine reboot and upon restart everything was working fine. I checked and the card had been updated with the latest driver. Update your Windows Experience Index and you should end up with Aero Glass enabled automatically too.TwiztOG43 said: ↑but i encountered what seems to be a problem

Question:
I just did the same thing (Dual boot with fresh copy of vista), my question is about the drivers for vista. The only thing i used was the Vista DVD, not the utility one. Everything installed fine and it seems to work. Where do i get drivers for vista, do i have to download them from hp, or are they on the utility dvd that came with the upgrade kit. Before i run in any trouble, can somebody give me some info on it? Greatly appreciated! -
Once you have booted into Vista, insert your HP utility disc and it should install the drivers.
I had the problem with the progress bar just going back and forth on some of the drivers (once it was the video card, the other time it was other software). I just closed the installer and reset and everything was fine. -
I have already completed the installation with the vista dvd, is it to late to install the drivers now? Everything seems to be working fine, but i guess it won't once i try to run different programs or apps. Can i just insert the utility dvd with vista OS running and if, will it install the drivers? Or do i have to start over with the vista dvd? Please help!

you are supposed to install drivers (after) you install vista. even with the upgrade. you are supposed to install vista then the drivers disc. so you are fine.compduce said: ↑I have already completed the installation with the vista dvd, is it to late to install the drivers now? quick question, making the vista partition with partition magic, will this ruin the quickplay part. Doesnt Quickplay use some unallocated space in order to be used? If so, how do I avoid this? thanks for your help!
