Well my two laptops shipped (11 days early) I have done much reading on them but to this point have not been able to answer 1 question... I ordered the dual 7200 rpm drive option for a total of 240GB, but I can't seem to find out how the drives will show up in windows.

Are they raided? ie raid 0? to provide 1 disk of 240GB? if so is it hardware? I don't think windows can boot from a software raid zero, can it?

Are they just two drives that show up in windows?

Are they set up as a JBOD? (Just a Bunch Of Disks)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mine show up as 2 drives.

    C and D

But C has the HP Restore partition on it called E which takes away 12 GB from the C drive.

You can probably set them up as a RAID, but as tinman2007 said, they come as 2 separate volumes (which I find pretty useless).

that stinks... 120g is pretty small for a system drive...I hope there is a way around that.

    Thanks for the heads up

You can definitely replace them. They're standard size hard drives; the only thing is that they use a special HP hard drive bracket, which should come with your original hard drives. So you can swap them out for any HDD of the same size you want.

I bought a 350GB external USB drive. It works pretty well for storring and playing my Video and music. The only thing I have on D is a couple of games and Crysis Demo.
I remved all the crapware on C with the exception of QP. Whic as soon as I am 100 percent sure that QP is not needed for any other media features or updates. It's going byby and being replaces with cyberlink's powee DVD ultra

I have to use this to play blu-ray movies right now....
Are there other programs out for that?
I just have one 250 gb in mine and want to install a second drive...
Ya'll know if the empty bay has the hard drive racks? Thanks

So I just opened it up and the bracket is not in the empty bay! I guess I will try to get in touch with tech support and see if they will mail me one. Does anyone know what kind of connector that is? I am not familure with laptop drives. Is it sata? I did take out my primary and I cannot believe how small it is. That is just a little i'll be darned info. Thanks all

I don't think they will notice the difference at all. They should create the recovery partition of whatever size is standard, then give the rest of the space to the C:\ partition, or in the case of the second HDD, give all the space to the D:\ partition. The reason I say this is that there are many hard drive configurations available from HP, and I don't think the recovery disks are different for different HDD configurations. So if you have 2x120 or 2x250, you're using the same disks. So if, for example, you changed to 2x500, it wouldn't be any different.

    1. AnyDVD HD + VLC Media Player should let you play Blu-ray DVDs. For more info, PM me, as I'm not sure of the legality of such methods.
    2. You'll have to shell out another $30 (I think) to get a bracket. They're HP specific, so you can't get them anywhere else, which is ridiculous, but vendor lock-in seems to be the standard nowadays.

I just bought POWER DVD 7 ultra delux the other day. It's working great for playing HD DVD's and the FAQ and Specs say it also plays Blue Ray.
    http://www.cyberlink.com/

I had read a couple of posts where people have removed Qickplay and they said their DVD's stopped working and also they could no longer play videos with Windows Media center. They had to re-install Quickplay to get everything working again.
This looks to me like QP removes codecs when it gets uninstalled. I havn't tried it yet.
Maybe powerdvd 7 will restore these codecs.
Becuae everything is working great right now. I just got the Webcam working without crashing anymore. So I'm going to wait a while now before screwing around with anything else for now.

I'm planning on doing a full clean install. Once I receive the anytime upgrade disk. I will remove Quickplay and see what happens before I attempt the clean install.

I'm pretty sure it'd be SATA. Get the bracket from HP, no other 'connectors' are necessary.

I just got a dv9743cl . I have two 160GB hard drives installed, one has the OS and the recovery partition for now and the other is just free space. Is it possible to boot from the secondary partition?

Yes I mean dual boot. But I want it to boot from the secondary drive, not just a partition on the primary disk. The computer came with a little book with 500 languages that says it is not configured to boot from the secondary drive and not to attempt to do so. I was wondering if there is a way to configure the BIOS to boot from the secondary drive. Does anybody have any ideas?

    Thanks

Yeah, it's easy, you install GRUB to the MBR of the 1st HDD, and then it can boot from any partition on any drive.

It's pretty simple, If you want to install a second OS just point it to the second HDD, and then when you boot up. it'll ask you from which OS do you want to boot into. It'll automatically see the second HD with the second OS.
