I just ordered a new dv7t, which is scheduled to be shipping on 9/24, and I was wondering if this thing can run dual hard drives? I know there are a lot of 17" laptops are capable of having 2 hard drives, but I don't remember seeing that as one of the options when I ordered it. I was hoping to use one drive for my OS, and then have a seperate drive to store all of my data.

The dv9700 series could have two physical hard drives so I would imagine the dv7 series could as well. I would check for you but hp is having issues it seems.

It does support dual HDDs, but no RAID.

HP offers dual hard drives as an option for the dv7t, so it does support them.

My only concern would be the additional heat that the second hard drive could generate.

I guess I didn't notice that option for some reason. Not that I would get the upgrade from HP anyways due to cost, but it's good to know that I can add one once I get it.

And additional heat will not be a problem, because what I'm going to do is get a 64GB SSD drive to use for the OS, and then use the 250GB drive that it comes with as a secondary drive to store all of my data. That way if the OS crashes or if I ever need to reinstall it, I can do so without having to worry about backing up & restoring all of my files. That's how I have my desktop set up right now, and it's one of the best mods I have ever done to my system.

This is exactly what I plan on doing in a year or so when the prices of the SSD's drop low enough.

I have heard mixed reactions about the hard drive mounting cage, some say it is needed to mount a 2nd drive in the open bay and someone else says they have one installed without the cage, simply using rubber washer to shim it tight.

On a previous HP nc8230 that I had, I lost the HD cage and I was able to install it using some foam as a shim between the HD and the cover to hold it in place. Does anyone know how much the HD cage costs? It may or may not be worth getting it depending on the cost.
