I just received my dv1000t and there really, really is a ton of bloatware on it, just like everyone says.

Given the problems others seem to have doing clean installs (mine did not ship with the OS or recovery disks anyway, although we do have one here from another computer), should I just go ahead and uninstall programs I don't need or want and use a registry cleaner of some type to get rid of them? And then burn recovery disks?

Or, should I burn recovery disks before and after?

Finally, can anyone direct me to a good step-by-step ****-removal instruction site, just in case?

To play it ultra safe, burn disks before and after. You can use the MSFT tools to remove software, that's a fine approach. Then take a look at the optimizing my computer guide and attack un-needed processes. After that you should be in great shape.

Thanks Brian, I did intend to use that "optimizing guide".

I was just reading the little booklet that came with the computer and found that only one set of recovery disks can ever be made (so they say), so I guess I'll do it before I make any changes.

Oh, MSFT tools..... is that Microsoft tools that are already on the computer?

Do I want the HP Photosmart Premiere software? I think probably not, since I already use Photoshop 7 (and IrfanView for quickies).

Do I want to keep any of the games? I'm not really a game player, but if I get bored, eh, I might. Scrabble might be fun. There are nearly 40 games on this thing, with an option to get more!

And how do I find where the other stuff is hidden, like the AOL signup and whatever other intrusive, oughtta-be-a-law-against stuff, so I can get rid of it?

    Jonezart,

You can get rid of all the stuff in your laptop. Just remove the programs you don't want from the control panel and delete all shorcuts.

The clean install is a good option but it seems that HP isn't sending OS' recovery disks anymore so it'll be harder.

As mentioned above, the Optimizing Guide in the "Notebook Dummy Guide Articles" forum is great. Helped me tons.
