    Has anyone else noticed this?

    I have a DV8000T which I bought 1 year ago.

I have read several reviews online that said the fan was quiet. But my experience has been the opposite...the fan is constantly powering up and down, varying speeds and sometimes extremely loud like a blow dryer, other times running at a soft whisper. It's VERY annoying!

I have the NVIDIA GE Force GO 7600 with 256 RAM. I've read on the forums that some have suggested the noise is from the graphics card??

I am not a gamer so don't play any games. All I ever do is email and the www and maybe Winamp or MSN/Yahoo chat.

Last time I downloaded speedfan there was no support for this model. I installed rivatuner but I am not an expert and don't want to fry this laptop. If rivatuner will help with this problem, then can someone please post the settings? (I was formerly working as a network engineer MSCE/CNE and also certified by Compaq/HP on servers for about 7 years but I haven't been working in IT for a few years (career change) and anyway never really got into laptop support (mainly servers/networks) so I appreciate your help.)

Or...is this laptop or graphics card defective? I have a 3 yr warranty.

    Thanks

Maybe there's a lot of dust/dirt accumulating inside. Have you opened it up to check?

Forgot to mention, I have blown it out very thoroughly with canned air until it blew clear for several seconds...and it did not show much improvement in the fan. A little, but not much. It seems the more windows I open up then the more the fan spins up and down and I understand the principle why it's doing it of course but with 256MB of RAM you'd think it would be designed to run a little cooler.

why wud the video card have anything to do with this? the CPU usage goes up whenever you open something then goes down when the window has been launched and in the system RAM. could be the BIOS that ur using has changed the temps and fan throttle.

so how many fans can u see on the underside? if more than one then establish which one is the annoying fan and what component it's cooling. if ur using XP then u shud be able to check the temps of the video card in its display properties, with vista use ntune.

There is the possibility that dust is built up on the fan blades themselves, even after blowing out the vent cover. This could make the fan noisy (as well as a bad bearing).

I have a dv8408us w/the same video card and my fan is always going on and off and at different speeds, as well. Even at its loudest, it's much quieter than my desktop PC, so I've gotten used to it.
