Trying to load XP on to the above mentioned machine. Getting BSOD within minutes of inserting the XP disc while drivers are still loading. Read through a huge thread on here about XP drivers but the seem to be talking about wanting to downgrade from Vista to XP. Anyone know the procedure to dual boot instead of just downgrading? Thanks.

One of the culprits could be that if you're using a SATA drive then you need to manually load the drivers for it. Windows XP doesn't naively support SATA. Some computers have the option to mask a SATA as an IDE drive (both my HP 8510p laptop and HP dc7800 desktop have the feature in the event you want to load XP), you might want to check the BIOS for that feature.

Or you can go the proper way and integrate the SATA driver into your XP disc.

Or go the much easier way and run XP under a virtual machine.

How so? Using VirtualBox I get around 80% of native performance on a hosted XP session.

Yes i am happy with VMWare on my desktop, a Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 3.67GHz, 8GB DDR2-1066 and Radeon HD 3870, running Vista 64-bit as host OS. But on occasion the sound in the VMs still crackles and pops, it's barely usable for old games, let alone any producing work in FL Studio. I mainly use the XP virtual machine to run software for flashing mobile phones, and other dubious drivers that like to go wrong and crash the system.
On my DV5, i did try FL Studio under VirtualBox when i was running Ubuntu. I was able to produce a decent song in a couple days (i had a really bright idea), but i wasn't able to truly appreciate it till i rendered it and played back into the host. It was all crackles even with a single instrument playing and over 150ms of latency, which isn't too usable really.
Oh and don't even try running a virtual machine on battery power. -

I have Vista and XP dual-booting on my DV5t.
I made two separate C: partitions, one for XP, one for Vista and use Vista's OS boot menu. On power up I get the menu to select the desired OS. I do not believe you can dual boot with both OS's installed to the same partition.
As a result I have installed some apps twice - once to each OS's C: partition. I have additional partitions for user data, media files, etc so that both OS's can share data. In addition, you can use the disk manager in each OS to mount the other OS's partition to a different letter (I use V: for vista
Not so surprisingly, I rarely ever boot to Vista. That may change when I try installing Win7 Pro, when my new Hard drive for this DV5t comes on Friday (Hitachi 7200 RPM 500gb, to go with my blu-ray burner upgrade) -
Ya google slipstream SATA drivers with XP and you'll find the how to faq. I think its also in the XP thread that's stickied. Enjoy!
