Hi ive had my dv5t for about 7 hours now (lol yes ive counted. and yes i love it)

why is the backup drive so darn small? i didnt check the size of it and i went to back up my music and pictures, which is a total of about 15 gigs together. I have to compress it all to make it fit on the drive, is it worth it to just get an external?

How much space do you have altogether?

Remember that when backing up your data you are just really making a copy of it on your existing hard drive. Your data is only protected to the extent that it can be retrieved in case you accidently erase the original or it becomes corrupted.

In case of a hard drive failure ALL your data is gone, forever, that is why you should backup to an external device (harddrive or removable media) if your data is important to you.

I back up my complete notebook and desktop hard drives to an external hard drive monthly or sooner (takes about an hour) and also periodically copy all my documents and media files to DVD as I feel appropriate.
