    Hi
I am fairly new to Windows Vista. The laptop always took 2-3 min to start up ( my WinXP takes only 43 seconds); however, once enter the windows everything is fairly fast that includes shut downs.

Can anyone help me out? I already clean out all those crappy softwares that came with Hp. Is there any way can fix this without reinstalling? If I really need to do a clean installation, how do I do it? I ordered the restoring disc (not the one you burn out); however it does look like it just return the computer to the original state, which will include those stupid useless softwares again.

I started with about a 1.5 minute boot. I did a bunch of tweaking from TweakGuides and wound up with a 3 minute boot. I clearly messed something up. I finally restored Vista with the recovery DVD's .

You need to get all of you data off the hard drive then just put the recovery DVD in and say ok a few times over the course of 4-6 hours and you will be back to where you started.

All the useless crappy software will be there again (thanks HP). But, this time around I just uninstalled all the crap and now I am back around a 1-1.5 minute boot.

Doing this will make you re-install any software that did not come with your machine, reconfigure any aftermarket hardware, your wireless network, and your TV channels on your tuner (if you have one).

A less severe solution is use a restore point from when the boot time was good, but it sounds like you never really had a good boot time. Don't know if I helped, but this is what worked for me.

Going further perhaps you have a driver hanging up or a pile of programs set to "start whenever Windows does". These can make the boot times unbearable.

I get around it by sleeping the computer instead of powering off when I'm not using it. It then only takes about 5 seconds to get back to work.
