This could also effect your built in mic and your power button.
This is a fairly common issue, if you have a dv6000 and/or dv9000 you will almost certainly have this problem. The issue is with a 1 of the 2 thin ribbons leading up to the power switch and the media touch pad. The problem is that these ribbons were not make to be put up to the kind of stress of course its also aside from them being very poorly made.
They develop waves them, because of the constant pressure being applied to the power button. Once they develop these waves in the ribbon, it is only a matter of time before the stress gets to be too much and they break. A good way to imagine it is someone jumping up and down on a sled... its only a matter of time till its going give way to the stress....
To get this fix you will have to send it off to service, unless you want to spend $8-$20 and get one off of ebay... but it is doomed to fail as well...
There is a way for a quick fix... but its kinda sacrificing one thing for another... You can swap the power panel cable and the media touch pad cable(the media touch pad cable rarely goes bad)... that should fix your sound issue... theres 1 or 2 other common occurrences that could cause this sound issue...
Thats to fix the common speaker issue. If your not getting any audio even when you plug in your headphones it could be your front media panel, those are known to go bad as well...

I included a couple a pictures to give you all a better idea of whats going on..
DSC01446.JPG(Image #1) - This is directly under the keyboard on the left side.
The Right(Top) cable is going to the media touch pad.
The Left(Bottom) cable goes to the power panel.
DSC01447.JPG(Image #2) - This is Directly under the power button. The Power panel is responsible for 3 things. 1) Turning on the Computer. 2) Allowing Connection to the Mic(upper left input(Black,Orange,Yellow,Blue Wires)). 3) Sending Audio to the speakers(upper right(Red,White,Black Wires)).
DSC01448.JPG(Image #3) - This is the ribbon that allows the power panel to do all it needs to. (GOOD)
DSC01449.JPG(Image #4) - This is the ribbon that does not allows the power panel to do all it needs to. (BAD) How ever the one in the picture will still work, but will fail soon if too much pressure is applied to the top of the 'wave'.
Hope that helps... -
Thanks for the quick info, any chance dv2000 series are affected by this issue?
-
its very rare but from time to time we get a unit in with certain LED's not working(won't come on(most common is the volume section)), which is due to the cable which links the logic board and the media touch pad.
-
The dv2000 AMD models are probably our most commonly received units... They have more issues then I would like to say...

ScifiMike12 Drinking the good stuff
My DV6500t speakers kind of rattle at times, especially when there is some loud music/sound being played through them. Does this address that?
-
it is a possible result, the most comon symptoms are;
* Crackling audio.
* Audio cutting in and out.
* Audio only on 1 side.
* LED on power switch does not turn on.
To test it you can have audio playing and press the edges of the power button.(don't actually press the power button) -
My dv6000 is not booting up its giving me the "NTLDR missing press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart computer" error I opened it up and found the two ribbon cables with the same problem, the metal stripes were actually broken. Could this be causing the NTLDR missing error and not allow the pc to boot, I even tried booting from the cd it just gave the error message.
-
NTLDR or NT Loader is the usually cause by an incomplete or corrupt Operating system install. Would those 2(windows error & ribbon) have to do with each other? I doubt it, the only thing I could think of those 2 issues possibly being related is if the ribbon was shorting on and off the speakers during install... Windows install HATES it when you add and remove stuff during initial install.
What operating system are you running(or trying to install/run)? -
Hi,
I am facing a similar problems since a week.
On my HP Pavilion 6703Tx, only the right speakers are working.
there is no audio output from the left side.
What can be the problem???
It has been just a month ago that i bought this laptop.
Can i get a replacement for it?
I have contacted the HP service provider and they have ordered a spare part(might be new speakers), and asked me to come next week.
Pls help me if one can.......... -
Hello, my leds for the volume, scroll lock and power just went out. Can anyone tell me which ribbon cable these get their power from? If its shared between the 3 of them or not? Strangely enough the volume and the quicklaunch work,
Thanks, Jack -
well I got the power led, its the ribbon that goes to it which is a mess... and I've got no idea how to really fix it besides ordering a part....
any thoughts on the other leds?
Edit***
If I click on the mute button it makes two beeps and doesnt mute... so either the cable is really messed up or its the chip, any thoughts? -
Your unit has the issue I mentioned in the first couple posts in this thread. Read through the 1st and 2nd posts, they explain what can be done... Ultimately you will probably need to send it into service.
-
Thank you, now they magically work, except for the power button... I think that Im just going to either buy a cable at an electronics shop, or, failing that, just solder some wires myself...
-
Think my power ribbon and my panel ribbon both got messed up during my motherboard reinstallation. I have one power ribbon otw from ebay, but I'm not positive its the problem.
Is there a way to test the board with out the power switch? a hidden way to test power on? shorting 2 pins on the MB connector? I want to know so i can send this MB back if its the true thing that went bad.
Oh, yeah, when the battery and the AC is connected the charge light does come on, so I'm going to assume the MB is working.....after all the last one was bad and none of the led's worked. -
The most common of the 2 cables to fail is the one going to the power cable, because of all the pressure that is applied to that area.
a way to test and see if your unit starts up is by pressing your quickplay and/or dvd buttons on your media touchpad... those can also start your machine up...
Another thing is you can swap those cables for the time being. -
oh my god, it's so good to finally find an answer to this...!
What i'm wondering is.. my powerbutton does NOT work, neither does my sound. but the quickplaybuttons work, although they dont make that noise when beeing touched.. i use the quickplaybutton to power up now and ctrl-alt-del to go into windows instead of the quickplaymode.
1.so if i change the ribbon, will the buttons still work together with my speakers? is that the sacrifice i must make? or will the powerbutton and the speakers work at the same time? dont really need the quickbuttons..
2. what would be the correct cable to look for ?
3. how come the icon for windows in quickplay turn the machine off again? is it possible to change? can the buttons be re-mappedin some way to go straight back to windows instead?
lotsa queastions and poor english i knowm but im so happy to find someone who seem to know this=)
Thanks som muchin advance! -
welll.. i actually fixed it! thanks for the advices! now i only need to know what the cable is called!
-
I have the audio problem too, I see it referred to here as the Known Issue but I can't find a reference to it on the HP website. I've had the motherboard replaced under the extended warranty but when I got it back the power button needed to be pressed much harder than before. I didn't complain as I didn't mind too much but now my speakers have gone too so I opened her up to see if the internal cables were the problem and after a reseat the power buton and speakers were both dead. I'm pretty much 100% in agreement that the cable is the problem but as the last poster said, I don't know what it's called, anybody able to helpout there? Can anyone recommend a place to get one as they are almost $45 on E-bay now. I've contacted HP too but I'd be interested in knowing if there is another way to get one or whether anyone has a part number for them.
Cheers,
Rob -
Wow! I'm so glad I found this thread. When my power button stopped working, I thought it was just the chip, but I'm a Linux user and because of the way my key's are mapped the QuickPlay Launch button works the same as the power button. So I was kinda pissed, but I figured I would deal with it.
But then my sound stopped working, and I thought I messed up a config script, and then, through the amazing power of google, I found this thread and learned that it was HP's fault, not mine. Hooray...kinda.
I was wondering if there are any other makers of these cables, maybe ones that wouldn't break due to standard use? I am also at a loss as to what they are called, but I plan on calling hp tomorrow to [hopefully] get info. I'll be back to repost what I learn. -
I have had this problem on my dv-6000t for some time now, the 1 year warrenty is up and I meant to upgrade it to a 3 year warrenty or so, but stupid me forgot. My power button and speakers are completely inoperative. The power button started to slowly not work and eventually it stopped working altogether, and the speaker stopped also. The quickplay buttons are how I turn my laptop on now. How much is this going to cost for an out of warranty repair on this? What a crappy design, if this happens again after repair im going to be real mad.
Also, shouldent they have to repair this free of charge because its so widespread, like a recall. This is complete BS if you ask me. -
Anyone? Lets get a claim going against HP for this, its a defect.
-
My speakers crackle and distort a lot... I always just assumed it's because they are cheap crappy built in speakers... but now I'm beginning to think otherwise. Or it could be a combination. I don't remember them distorting so much when I first bought this computer in Nov. 2006. I hardly ever use the built in speakers though... so it's not a big deal to me. But could this issue be related to that? All my quickplay buttons work fine, and the power button works fine as well.
-
Thanks for the advice. This fixed the sound problems on two DV6103nr's.
does anyone have the HP part# for this cable? -
The part number 431437-001 for the DV6000. That is the board and cable. You can locate the cable by entering that part number in ebay or google.
-
Ok looks like im going to fix this myself, Since my power button and speakers dont work, do I just need the power button board and ribbon cable? or just 1 ribbon cable alone?
-
It's hard to say, most likely the ribbon cable.
-
I took the laptop apart, the one ribbon cable is muffed up bad, its got the wave and they are all spilt across a line, almost like someone took a razor to just the electrical pads without cutting the plastic behind it. Im going to order one on ebay now.
-
Hello, I'm new to the site and see that a few people have the same no sound and failing power button issue as I ( dv6000 ).
I'm in AZ now but live in Canada. I'll be traveling back to Canada soon and I'm wondering can we only get the ribbons from ebay or is there a suppler that we can talk to?
Here is a link someone sent me to a class action suit.

I replaced the power button which can with a ribbon and everything is back to normal.
-
I too have experienced this problem.
First the left audio went, then the right. Then the Power button LED.
The most likely culprit? The motherboard issue:

I'm having the same problem and I'm looking for a place to order a new ribbon cable on ebay. the only one's I've found are asking $25 before shipping which seems a little outrageous to me. I've found this one that is for a dv9000. It looks the same but I'm wondering if anyone knows; Is it the same cable?

I just bit the bullet and bought a new cable and installed it. The problem is that it doesn't work and I still have the same problem. The audio works when I plug in headphones. The speakers however do not work at all.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do to remedy this? -
Someone on ebay is selling a cable upgrade (quality wise) to the original HP cable.
Item number: 150294646983 -
My speakers are crackling. I'm a 2 time loser on the Nvidea video chip problem. If I complain about my speakers, is it a 3rd repair free replacement, or would it be a 1st repair for the speakers?
-
Cable power and sound.
Easy way to repair and very quick.
Just cut a little bit 1/8" end of cable. The cable change the place and the contact make in new place, in new condition and new contact.
Simple, easy and long life again !

For the record, I switched the cables and now the power button and speakers work just fine. Media touch pad was eliminated. Thanks for all the info, it work great.

Hi FX
How does one determine if the ribbon or front audio module is faulty.
The ribbon does have quite tight creases in the Z section. The power button works fine and the quick launch buttons beep when pressed but other than that there is no audio (not sure if the beeps are from the speakers or elsewhere on the mobo).
Plugging in head phones creates no static clicks but plugging headphones into the mic does.
Additionally the mic in the sreen bezel works.
The vd6000 is a fresh factory reinstall.
I allowed vista to use the default drivers and have also tried the hp sp39295 drivers- during the driver install the speakers do "pop" briefly but that is all that happens sound wise.
Thanks -
Here are the " new redesigned/reinforced to withstand heat "
cables I googled. They're also selling them on ebay.
I've got 2 sets already and they are 2x thicker then original and quality is super. These will work for dv6000 and dv9000 -
I've lost my left speaker on my DV6000t. However, I have the right speaker, audio in both channels with headphones, a working power button/LED and a working MM panel. So, it seems like I do not [yet] have the ribbon cable issue...or do I?
I see from the photos in this post that there is a speaker connector (black) that connects three speaker wires to the power board. My unit went in for repair late last year (keyboard replacement); do you think they'd replace the ribbon cables as a matter of course? Could they they have partially inserted the speaker connector when re-assembling the unit? At this point, I have no way to verify either situation without taking the unit apart. Last resort for sure.
Thanks. -
Would the "ribbon cable" problem be connected to a USB issue? My scanner works fine on two out of three USB ports, but the third generates a "USB device not recognized" on Port_#0002.Hub_#0001.
I get the same error on other devices, such as flash drives. -

Yes it could be. By any chance is the third USB port the one on the right side?

i have the same power button/internal speakers issues. i use the quick play button to power up, as do others.
i have replaced the power button ribbon, purchased from ebay.
no joy.
i then replaced the power button itself. still no joy.
any ideas on what to do next?
thanks

Replacing the ribbon did the trick for me. An easy fix with a part from ebay. Total cost, $10.58. Thanks for the info. I needed to see how things looked inside.

Hello,
I just had the problem a few months ago. So I had to do some hard research to fix out how to fix the problem, which I did. I bought a ribbon on ebay for $10.50 and replace the old ribbon on my Dv6000 laptop. Although my power button is working correctly the speakers aren't. Have anyone got their speakers/sound skipping? Sometimes the speakers works fine when I restart the laptop numerous of times, as well my headphones input doesn't work either. So does anyone know what's causing this problem? -
I want to replace this sound/power cable on a laptop of a friend living abroad. The prob is that I don't know in advance which cable lenght is needed. I see on ebay 15 cm as well 20 cm.
My question is: should the 20 cm always fit? Can you get rid with overlenght if the original was a 15 cm one?
The laptop is a HP Pavilion dv6135nr , bought in the US. -
You won't have any problems fitting a longer cable.

FunnyX,
Thanks for the detailed info on changing the power ribbon. The pictures and your instruction for removing the laptop caing really help. Bought my ribbon on ebay for $6.50. Took about 10 minutes to replace. Saved about $300
Some suggestions for others who are facing the same problem:
1. Based on FunnyX instruction on Case Removal, instead of removing all the screws, all you need to remove are the 3C's and 2A's from the battery compartment. Next removed 2A's to open the 'touchpad/memory' compartment. Then remove one more A.
2. I find that the eraser end off a pencil is a useful tool for inserting the contact end of the ribbon into the contact end of the labtop. This allow for just the right amount of force and leverage. I tried my using my fingers but I keep bending the ribbon when trying to foce it into the contact point (angle is little awkward). Didn't want to keep on forcing for fear of breaking the new ribbon.
Hope this helps. -
