I have a dv6130us but everything works fine except the power button, when I try to turn it on not works, to turn it on I need to press quickplay button and then select Windows,

I was wondering Do I need to replace the power board or the ribbon?

I hope somebody can help me, thanks

    Hi,
In my HP pavilion DV6000, First my built-in speaker stopped working, gradually in-built mic stopped working and now, POWER on/off button stopped working. But to switch on the system, I am using media buttons.

If external mic and speaker is connected to system front end end slots it works.

By swapping the ribbons, will all the above mentioned problems be solved. Even I checked with HP support, they are asking to install drivers, update BIOS. Everything is done still the same problem persists.

You seem to be a genius. Can you help me with this!

    Hi,
I'm sorry if I'm re-opening an old post but I couldn't find any other place to ask this...

What are the right instructions or advices on how to put the flat ribbon cable back to the motherboard? I already lost a pair of cables trying to put them back to the motherboard :(

As you may know the motherboard connectors don't have a lock so you just have to put the cable in there but that's the part that I'm not getting right, I just can't put it without breaking it.

I hope someone can help me or give me any advice on how to do it. BTW I already tried the pencil eraser tip but it didn't worked for me :(

    Thanks.

The connectors are the ones without the brown lock tab, correct? Then you must grab the plastic tab of the cable with your fingers, and slowly slide it into the connector while applying pressure on the top of the tab, not from the sides. You're trying to insert it by pushing onto the middle of the ribbon cable, that's why it doesn't work.

Thanks for your answer, what about using 2 credit cards and slide the cable through the middle of them? I have very big fingers and it's kind of difficult to hold that little tab...

Well I'll try one more time to see how it goes and I'll let you know.

    Thank you.

I have a similiar problem with a friends dv6000, mine was actually the ribbon and was just replaced a couple days ago. But my friends doesn't have any sound installed. The volume icon shows a red x and says there aren't any sound device installed. Neither the speakers or the headphone jacks work and I HAVE tried reinstalling all of the drivers. I've read online that it might be the motherboards integrated sound. It said that the board can overheat and short circuit and requires a board specialist to repair. Anyone have any info on this as I would like to get her computer fixed. Also her network port doesn't work correctly, but thats another issue. Thanks for your help.

Read the label on the back and post the full model number (dv6xxx) of your dv6000 here.

Since you said you did try reinstalling drivers already, and that your wired network card doesn't work either, i'm suspecting a motherboard chipset failure. nVidia chipsets aren't known to be exactly reliable. Mine's still in one piece (knock on wood), but i've heard enough horror stories about them, and seen a few fail myself.

I'm afraid you're going to need a new motherboard.

Hey FunnyX, Thanks a bunch for your posts regarding this issue. The pictures and the screw map especially were very helpful. I am sure that without those helpers I probably would have screwed it up or broken something. I decided to try the cable swap and couldn't believe it when it actually worked!

You have saved me lots of time and money that an old guy on a fixed income couldn't afford. Thank you very much- you are the best!

Sorry to join in so late, I have a dv6120us with similar problem: no sound except at headphones and a power button that keeps needing to be pushed with more and more force to power on. Sounds like the ribbon cable replace is a given to try first. Two questions I don't see discussed much:
    1) is it advisable to replace the power button(board??) as well?
2)does the extra force to push the power button indicate a faulty power button/board neccessarily?
Just hoping to have the proper parts on hand first try....
Sounds like the majority of folks have resolved the issue with just the ribbon cable replacement. I see many more cables for sale (Ebay, 2fix.net) than I see power button/boards for sale out there. Thank you all in advance for all the great info here, I apologize if opening this old post isn't the best way to proceed - I'm not very versed at using forums. Thanks again, Gerry

I replaced the Kolt cable with the heavier cables from 2fix.net. I wrestled with the connectors for a bit, a little latch involved on the switch board end. Sound and power switch work again, and no I didn't replace the actual power button board. Thank you all for all the information!!

I saw this on youtube and it is the same on my dv6000..

One thing to do to test if it may be the ribbon with the power button/ sound issue is push down on the notebook right below the power button! While I am pressing below the power button my speaker works again. :) Ribbon is shorting obviously.

Next time I will try another brand like Toshiba or Acer.

Just ordered a couple ribbon replacements from http://2fix.net as suggested--thanks for that one.

Yes arter reinstalling drivers and doing virtually everything I knew to do I mashed the panel by the "on botton" the speakers temporally came on. Kudos on your info, where can I get new wire ribbons, does anyone make a better fix?

I did the "push down on the notebook right below the power button" on a friends DV6000. It did not powered on. try the other option here to bring it on and did not work either. I opened the laptop (it was opened at Best Buy before and was missing quite a few screws!) and the cable was pretty much kinked. I will change the cable and post results.

Thanks FunnyX for your help on the sound problem.

I swap the cables and the sound didn't come out to speakers and now sound to the headphone is very, very noisy..do you think is a mother board problem?

    Thanks again.

Guys, I had the same problem with my old dv6500. Two weeks ago, the power button stopped working, so I started using the quickplay buttons to turn on the laptop. In a couple of days, the quickplay panel lights went off and the speaker stopped working as well.

I ordered a set E118077 VW-1 ribbon cables off ebay and replaced both and now both the power button, the quickplay buttons and both the speakers work perfectly!

"There is a way for a quick fix... but its kinda sacrificing one thing for another... You can swap the power panel cable and the media touch pad cable(the media touch pad cable rarely goes bad)... that should fix your sound issue... theres 1 or 2 other common occurrences that could cause this sound issue..."

thanks for this tip! it worked for me, any idea where I can buy these ribbon cables?
