I'm trying to fix a broken laptop for a friend and need a little advice. First of all the computer is an HP Dv6108nr laptop. He said that one day it just wouldn't boot up. He decided the problem might be the motherboard so he took it apart himself. A local computer place tested the motherboard for him and they said it was fine. He gave up at this point and gave me a pile of computer parts...

I started by testing the hard drive in an external enclosure which worked just fine. Then I put the whole computer back together to test it since I never saw what was going on in the first place. When I try and boot it now it starts all the lights on the touch panel and sounds like it wants to turn on. You can hear the cd-rom check for a boot disk but I never hear the hard drive start to spin. At this point it just sits idle with all the power lights on but no display at all and no hard drive activity. I have tried resetting the CMOS but it didn't help at all. Anybody have any idea what could be wrong at this point?

Not sure. Make sure the HDD Drivers are in the computer. Maybe he did a HDD upgrade recently... Not sure.

    Try re-installing Windows using a boot/OS Disk. ;)

Yea I'm thinking I have a fried chip also. Since that is built in to the motherboard... I will need a complete new one right? I've seen a bunch on eBay.

Yes, but you should go to the link I posted and get HP to replace it under their enhanced warranty for free.
