Alright I need a notebook for college that should last me a good 3 years. The problem is i'm on a pretty tight budget so I can't really get a top of the line notebook.

So i've found a nice deal on a DV6699 which was a special edition around christmas.

    Specs:
    Core 2 Duo T7500
    2GB Ram
    Nvidia 8400GS
    250gig HD

I'll be using this as a media center for my TV, emailing, office.
I might play a game on this but I mainly game on my XBOX360. If the 8400GS could run oblivion decently that would be great.

Would this laptop suit my needs?

It will suit your needs. I can't give you a definite answer on whether or not it will run oblivion, because I'm not familiar with the game, but I would imagine that it should be able to run it fine at medium to low settings.

Also, if you are on a tight budget, keep an eye out for HP coupons. They are always running deals like $400 off of a laptop, or 20-30% off a laptop and so forth.

Keep an eye on this thread for coupon updates, or you can just google HP Coupons:

    Thanks for the reply.
I've posted a new thread at the what to buy section and made my budget a bit higher. Although I will keep an eye on this deal

No, because an HP laptop is unlikely to last 3 years.

Read some of the many horror stories on this forum, search Consumerist for "HP laptop," and remember that the DV-series laptops has so many defective motherboards that HP extended the warranty (and they face a class-action lawsuit).
Remember also that HP's repair service on these defective laptops is terrible.

    My own personal experience:
My first HP notebook blew up after 2 years 9 months.
My second is on its 4th trip back to HP.

Hmm...the dv series recalled were the dv60xx series, not the dv65xx and newer models which have different hardware compared to the ones which were recalled.

The one the OP is looking at is not affected by the issue.

You really only hear about the horror stories on this forum because it is a forum. People usually don't try and find these forums when they have good experiences with tech support. If you think about it, what is this forum for? Help, Information, Troubleshooting Problems, etc., so why would people who have no problems or have had good experiences with HP post here if they are not already a member.

I'm not going to lie, HP doesn't have the greatest support out there, but it isn't bad 100% of the time. I've sent in my laptop a couple times and have had great support, so there's a good story for you right there.

Anyways, I believe he was asking if the specs of the laptop would last him 3 years.

To be honest, I always thought HP was good before I started googling when I posted this thread. Now I'm not sure if Europe has the same problem with customer support. Being a student I'll probably won't have the money to buy a new one when the time comes. I'll skip this one and another deal will probably catch my eye this summer.

    Thanks for the tips.
