Hey guys, my dv6t froze while playing battlefield 3 and when I tried restarting, it would no longer POST (nothing on screen). When I press the power button, the caps lock LED lights up once, pauses, then lights up again before restarting. I checked the hp website at Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English) but I am a bit confused as to how many times it actually blinks since my computer doesn't really cycle through the indication multiple times. I also tried hard resetting the BIOS by holding the power button for a min with no AC power and even tried taking out the CMOS battery for about 3 hours to no avail. Does anyone else have experience with the hp LED status indicators? Right now I am guessing its most likely a fried CPU since the light blinks once and then pauses before blinking again, but is there a way to check if it is actually the CPU without putting another CPU in?

Try taking out the RAM and using only one stick at a time to see if one has gone bad.

Its not the ram. I've tried taking them out and using one at a time. Also the site says there is a separate indicator for ram issues

it seems like a dead CPU to me. a bad RAM module would cause beeps (or other syndromes). my old COMPAQ laptop once died on me while i was searching on eBay to buy some extra RAM for it (!) and i had to power it down. upon a restart, i was greeted with a couple of blinking lights, a black screen, and absolutely no noise or any other indicators as to what might have happened. turned out the CPU was gone, and once HP replaced it, the laptop came back to life.

maybe the temperatures went too high up in Battlefield 3 and killed the CPU?

Yea the CPU temps were going way up to the mid 90s while playing bf3. I think this is still within the specified temps from intel but it's really pushing it...

I am only 2 weeks out of warranty and from what I've heard, Hp charges for even phone calls to them for those who's machines are out of warranty. But given that it's a CPU problem, where would be the best place to purchase another processor? Mine came with the 2630qm, but would the newer 2670qm also be compatible?

    Thanks

It very rare that cpu`s go faulty, it`s more likely something on the motherboard has gone, due to the load placed on it by battlefield 3

Yea that's what I thought at first but since the light indicator is pointing to the CPU, that's my only guess for now :(. I don't have any other way to test the whether it's the CPU though.

So does anyone know if the 2670qm is compatible with those laptops that originally shipped with the 2630qm?

Yes, it is, as both of them are using the same socket (FCPGA988). The 2670qm is just ~6% faster than the 2630qm. If you will find a way cheaper 2630qm than 2670qm, don't hesitate and buy the 2630qm, more info Intel comparison and here

So i recorded a video of the LED error code: Dv6t black screen - YouTube

I'm not exactly sure what the code is since it doesn't really cycle through it as hp's website would suggest. The caps lock key lights up once 2 or 3 seconds after pressing the power button and then pauses for two seconds before lighting up again. After that the computer restarts right away. However, after the restart it does different things different times. Sometimes the light would light up and sometimes it wouldn't. By the way the computer is restarting itself whenever the touchpad light goes out and comes on again.

    Anyone have any suggestions?
