Well I can tell you that my disk drive wont read DVD-R blank media. I do have iTunes installed but I doubt that has any effect on it.

I haven't seen or have heard of any problems with itunes. I rarely use it but I have installed iTunes and burned some disc with it without a problem. I think is not that common as there's not really that much reports or post that I have seen. I usually use dvd+r and BD-r disc and they work fine.

This has been happening for a while, at least with Vista and 7. It doesn't affect just HP, any Optical Drive machine running Windows can have this happen. Symptoms range from no Optical Drive reading, to just reading CD's, just reading non-burnt discs, just reading Dual Layer discs, combinations of that and so on. In some case it will corrupt the driver and have it fail to load on startup (in Device Manager you will get code 10, 19, 39, etc.). The Drive will mechanically still eject and attempt to read the discs (if yours doesn't, this will not fix it and you most likely have a hardware problem), but will usually eject the tray, or just try and eject a slot load drive, and ask you to insert a disc.

It isn't just iTunes that can do this, but Nero, Windows Updates (for Media Player), and other programs that can use the Optical Drive. In most cases it simply adds the UpperFilter and/or the LowerFilter values to the DVD/CD Rom Class in the Registry. Microsoft's solution is to simply remove them and reboot, or run the Microsoft Fixit. The KB article is below, the Fixit can be obtained directly from Microsoft there (don't download it from random web sites).

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

While I own a HP (and Macbook before that) my day job is tech support for a competitor. I have gone through this process on the phone with many people while they run the above Fixit then reboot the machine (I actually usually just run through the Registry as its quicker) and I can safely say that in the rare few cases when it hasn't worked, the machine has come in and we have pretty much always replaced the drive due to a hardware fault

Hope that helps someone who can't work out why the Optical Drive isn't working, or isn't consistent and reads some discs over others.
